On June 21, 2023, a supercell thunderstorm developed in the far southern Texas panhandle. The supercell moved southeastward through the western Rolling Plains and it eventually moved into the Texas big country and the San Angelo National Weather Service area. It quickly intensified in Motley County just north of Matador, Texas. A mile wide tornado went through the west side of Matador around 8pm killing 4 people. It rated as an EF3 tornado. 3 of 4 deaths that happened from the tornado in Matador were on the west side of the intersection of highways 62 and 70. This included a man who was near his semi parked at a gas station on the north side of I-62 as well as two men that were inside a recreational vehicle parked next to a restaurant on the south side of I-62. Both truck and RV were rolled over and completely destroyed. The fourth victim was a woman inside her home located about three tenths of a mile south of the intersection and west of I-70.
