On May 31, 2013, an extremely large, powerful, erratic wedge tornado occurred over areas of central Oklahoma. The tornado was a rain-wrapped, multi-vortex tornado. The tornado initially touched down at 6:03pm central daylight time west-southwest of El Reno, rapidly growing in size and becoming more violent as it tracked through central portions of Canadian County. The wind speed was 313 miles per hour and the width was 2.6 miles long. It killed only 8 people including storm chasers, Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and his friend Carl Young when Paul and Carl were pulled out of the vehicle and Tim was found in the drivers side. It was an EF5 tornado.
