On February 10, 2013 a large multi-vortex EF4 wedge tornado devastated cities west of Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg and Petal, Mississippi. The tornado was one of eight that touched down in southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama. It reached a maximum path of 0.75 miles through the Hattiesburg area and reached estimated maximum sustained winds of 170 miles per hour in the Oak Grove neighborhood west of Hattiesburg. It destroyed many structures and impacted University of Southern Mississippi, Oak Grove High School and Hattiesburg High School. The tornado killed 4 people and injured 71 others.
