On May 22, 2011, there was a large and devastating multi-vortex EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri. The tornado formed just west of Joplin and intensified quickly. The tornado tracked eastward through Joplin and continued across I-44 into rural portions of Jasper and Newton counties before dissipating. The tornado was a rain wrapped tornado. The tornado also struck St. John Regional Medical Center. The tornado killed 158 people.
