Chapter 15
New Signets

Zara sat with her squad as she ate lunch. Violet had gone to the library. The boys wanted to talk about the party and Zara told them how it was. Imogen stabbed at the apple. Zara's eyes wondered to Garrick who was sitting with Xaden at the Command Table. Bodhi was with some of his friends not to far away. Violet slid into a seat next to her. Zara's head snapped towards Ridoc as he was explaining a sparring that Sawyer had.

"It was the coolest thing ever. One second he was sparring against that third-year with the wicked broadsword skills, and then Sawyer..."

"You could let him tell the story." Rhiannon rolled her eyes.

"No thank you." Sawyer shakes his head, staring at his fork with a hefty dose of fear. Violet and Zara share looks. Ridoc just grins.

"And then the sword just twists in Sawyer's hand, curving towards the third-year even though Sawyer was way off the mark." Ridoc grimaces. "Sorry, man, but you were. If your sword hadn't decided to warp and go straight for the guy's arm.."

"You're a metallurgist? Really?" Quinn asked, raising her eyebrows. Zara was surprised. Sawyer could manipulate metals. So far, he was the first of them to display any form of power. Sawyer nods.

"That's what Carr says. Aetos dragged me straight to the Professor when he saw it happen." Sawyer said.

"I'm jealous! I want my signet power to manifest!" Ridoc said, grabbing his chest.

"You wouldn't be so excited if it meant you weren't sure if your fork would stab into the roof of your mouth because you can't control it yet." Sawyer said

"Good point." Ridoc looks at his tray.

"You'll manifest when your dragon is ready to trust you with all the power." Quinn said as she finished off her water. "Just hope your dragons trust you before about six months and..." She makes a sound like an explosion and mimics it with her hands.

"Stop scaring the children. That hasn't happened in..." Imogen pauses. "Decades." Everyone stared at Imogen. Imogen rolls her eyes. "Look, the relic your dragons transferred onto you at Threshing is the conduit to let all that magic into your body. If you don't manifest a signet and let it out, then after a bunch of months, bad things happen." Everyone gawked at her.

"The magic consumes you." Quinn adds, making the explosion sound again.

"Relax, it's not like a hard deadline or something. It's just an average." Imogen said. Zara pushed away her plate.

"I lost my appetite." Zara grumbled.

"Fuck me, it's always something around here." Ridoc muttered.

"Feeling a little luckier now." Sawyer said, looking at his fork.

"We'll get you some wooden utensils." Violet said.

"And you should probably avoid the armory or sparring with anything." Zara said, looking at Sawyer.

"That's the truth. At least I'll be safe during flight this afternoon." Sawyer said. Xaden was watching them as Zara picked up her tray and went to put on a stack. Zara went out for air. She buttoned up the buttons on her coat as the November air hit her body.

'You ate enough?' Garrick asked.

'No. Imogen and Quinn were talking what happens if we don't get our signet.' Zara said down the bond.

'Ignore them. They are trying to scare you.' Bodhi said down the bond. Zara smiled as the others join her. 'We'll see you later tonight.'

'Just don't fall off Adish.' Garrick said down the bond.
