Chapter 28

War Games

The skies were crystal clear for the middle of May. Garrick was with leadership and Bodhi was with his squad. Zara was bouncing on the balls of her feet with excitement. All her daggers were in their holders.

"What do you think our assignment is going to be?" Liam asked as they stand in formation with Fourth Wing. "Deigh thinks we're on offense. He won't stop going on about getting to kick Gleann's ass..." He pauses. "Guess dragons hold grudges."

'And your quiet.' Zara scolded Adish as Leadership is gathered ahead of them, getting their assignments from Xaden. Garrick was going to be part of Xaden's team. Garrick stood next to Xaden and he met Zara's eyes and smiled. Zara returned it.

'The Blonde One isn't wrong, Fire One. We do hold grudges and don't forget the threat of Jack. Blade has it out for me after giving him a scratch.'

'Even though your his elder?' Zara asked. Adish growled.

'Some of the oranges don't like me. Blade and Gleann are some of them.' Adish growled. Zara sighed.

"We're definitely on offense. Otherwise, we'd already be in the field. I haven't seen a single rider from First Wing since lunch." Rhiannon said. Zara looked around and realized she was right.

"I think she's right." Violet said.

"Why do you think riders wear black anyways?" Zara asked pulling at her leathers. It was scorching in the sun.

"Because it's badass." Ridoc answers.

"So it's harder to see when we bleed." Imogen chimes in.

"Forget I asked." Zara grumbles. Zara's eyes linger on Garrick as he listens to Xaden.

'Stop staring?' Garrick grumbled.

'Just wondering if we are on the offense or defense?' Zara asked.

'Both.' Garrick said. Zara raised an eyebrow. 'Aetos will explain. Don't cause to much trouble.'

'Mmm. I think you and Bodhi are the ones I should worry about.' Zara said.

'Hey." Bodhi and Garrick said. Zara smiled as the leadership meeting broke up. Dain heads over with Cianna. Dain was beaming.

"Which is it? Offense or defense?" Heaton asked.

"Both." Dain said. Zara raised an eyebrow at a fake surprise. "First Wing has taken a defensive position in one of the practice forts in the mountains, and they're guarding a crystal egg." There were excited murmurs in the squad of excitement.

"What are we missing, because you guys seemed thrilled about an egg." Ridoc said.

"From past years, we know that eggs are worth more points." Cianna grins. "Flags have statistically been the lowest, and captured professors rank somewhere in the middle."

"But they like to switch it up. The same way we could be going for a real objective on the line only to discover it's not as valuable as we thought." Dain explained.

"So how is this both offense and defense? If they have the egg, then clearly we should go get the egg." Zara said.

"Because we've also been give a flag to defend and no outpost to do it in." Dain grins. "And our squad has been assigned to carry it."

"And who is going to carry the flag?" Imogen asked.

"That's going to be the fun part." Dain smiles wider.
