Chapter 34

Fight for Resson

Xaden had a thousand emotions cross his face. They head over to the battlements.

"Liam. Give me a report." Xaden said.

"The fliers are engaged, all seven, six of them. Looks like they're trying to draw fire away from the civilians, but damn, the venin are wielding a kind of fire I've never seen among riders. Three surround the city, and one is making his way toward a structure in the middle. The clock tower." Xaden nods and starts giving orders. Garrick and Soleil will do a perimeter sweep for reconnaissance while the rest of them target the venin on various sides of Resson, keeping an eye on the advance on the clock tower.

"The only way to take them out is by dagger." Xaden said. Zara made sure her daggers were in hands reach. Bodhi gave her a few extra.

"That means we'll have to dismount and fight once we get the townspeople to whatever safety we can find." Garrick's face was set in grim lines. "Don't throw your only weapons unless you're certain of your aim." Xaden nods.

"Save as many people as you can. Let's go." Xaden said. They make their way down the steps and through the courtyard. Garrick and Bodhi walk behind Violet and Zara. Their dragons wait, all perched on the edge of the ridgeline. They were shifting their weight in agitation as they survey the trading post below. Adish was between Cuir and Chradh as Zara walks between Cuir and Adish.

'I knew you would make that decision when I bonded with you. You don't like sitting still when people suffer.' Adish said.

'I never did. I knew being a rider I could help more and knowing that command wants this hidden. I won't sit still.' Zara said. Cuir lightly nudges Adish, but his eyes were on the trading post. Chradh had his head lowered. Garrick and Bodhi come in front of their dragons.

"Don't leave Adish unless you have to." Garrick said. Zara gave him a look. "Don't give me that look. It's an order."

"Yes, dad." Zara said.

"We trust you, but your still a first year." Bodhi said. Zara sighed.

"I know." Zara said. Garrick moves forward but a shriek comes. They turn. An enormous gray dragon emerges from a valley two ridgelines to the south. It tucks its two legs up under its massive body as it flies away from them, heading straight for Resson.

"Do we have a riot nearby?" Zara asked.

"No." Xaden said. Garrick and Bodhi look worried. The dragon shrieks again, spewing a streak of blue fire down the mountainside. It sets some smaller trees on fire.

"Blue fire. No." Zara whispered.

"Wyvern. Xaden, it has two legs, not four. It's not a dragon. It's a wyvern." Violet said. Zara felt her blood go cold.

"Well, there went our air superiority." Imogen said. She shrugs. "Fuck 'em. They can die, too. They can die, too." Adish growls.

'They created abominations.' Adish growled.

'Is that why you been rough on me with flight maneuvers?' Zara asked.

'Yes. I lost my last rider because of them.' Adish said.

"Guess we know all the details now." Liam said.

"Anyone want to change their minds." Xaden asked. No one answered. "No? Then mount up." Zara turned towards Adish, but Garrick grabbed her arm and pulled her to him. He kissed her, hard. Zara melted into the kiss. Bodhi pulled her to him after Garrick pulls back and Bodhi kisses her too.
