Chapter 2

Surviving First Day

Zara stood in formation between a girl named Luca and a guy named Sawyer as the death roll was read. Zara didn't like Luca, who acted like a spoiled bitch and tried to be nice to Zara. Zara saw she only wanted to be friends because of her royal status. Bodhi didn't seem to care when he walked her to her barracks. He just asked what it was like living in a castle. Zara didn't mind telling him. Zara's eyes found him in his squad. He stood tall. She was drawn like a magnet to him. Her eyes flicked to Garrick, who had his back to her. Zara sighed.

'Stop it, Zara. Your father won't be happy if he knew you were eying two marked ones.' Zara thought. She closed her eyes. What the hell was wrong with her.

"Simone Casteneda." Fitzgibbons closes the scroll. "We commend their souls to Malek." Zara sighed.

"Hopefully you all ate breakfast, because you're not going to get another chance before lunch." Dain said, turning to face his Squad. "Second and third years, I'm assuming you know where to go. There were some mutters from the senior members. "First-years, at least one of you should have memorized your academic schedule when it was handed out yesterday. Stick together. I expect you all to be alive when we meet this afternoon in the sparring gym." Zara's eyes lit up at the word of sparring. Her and Cam would spar with the guards or each other. Her father found her on top of Cam, beating the crap out of him and that ended their sparring together, but she always took on the guards. To this day, Cam is afraid of his sister. Alic was the one that did more sparring with Cam.

"And if we're not?" Ridoc asked.

"Then I won't have to be concerned with learning your name, since it will be read off tomorrow morning." Dain said. A second year snorts. "Sawyer." Dain looks at a first year.

"I'll get them there." Sawyer said. Zara found out last night he was a repeat who didn't bond with a dragon last year. Zara hoped she didn't meet the same fate.

"Get going." Dain orders and the squad breaks as other squads do the same.

"We have about twenty minutes to get to class." Sawyer calls. "Fourth floor, second room on the left in the academic wing. Get your shit and don't be late!" Sawyer heads off to the dormitory. Zara moved away from Luca as she tried to talk to Zara and walked by Violet and Rhiannon talking. Zara headed for the dormitory to grab her bag and ran into a hard body.

"Sorry." Zara said as hands grabbed her from falling.

"Easy there." Zara's eyes snapped up and Garrick stood there, grinning down at her. "Seemed like you were in a daydream, Princess."

"Please don't call me that." Zara said, moving away and heading into the dormitory. Garrick followed.

"Well you are the King's daugther." Garrick said as he caught up to her.

"I just don't like being called that or your highness. Royal events are fine, but here. No." Zara said.

"Then I won't call you that again." Garrick said. Zara stopped and Garrick turned. Zara looked up at him.

"Why are you talking to me? My father was the one that gave General Melgren the order to kill your families?" Zara asked. Garrick just smiled.

"Were you the one that gave it, Sassy." Garrick said. Zara lowered her eyes at the new nickname. "You didn't. Your not at fault for your father's choice. And you seem different then your brother."

"You knew him?" Zara asked as they head for the door. Garrick wasn't sure how to answer it, because Xaden killed Alic to save his life.

"He started here when I did with Xaden." Garrick said. Zara didn't look hurt. "I guess he wasn't a favorite of yours?" Zara snorted.
