Louis' POV
Sergeant Gregory continues driving until we arrive in the capital city of New Mexico, Santa Fe. It's really different from how it used to be. The buildings are collapsed, and you can't see any humans, only zombies. Duke is still watching Allie, hoping she will wake up soon. We've already treated our wounds, and they're still healing.
"Where is the girl with double blades?" Sergeant Gregory asked while driving.
"She's already dead, not by zombies, but because of the hunter who threw a spear into her chest," Yvette informed him.
"I couldn't save her. I tried to stop the bleeding, but she closed her eyes with tears," Maggie said, her own eyes filling with tears.
"When we saved Akira, chased by zombies that day, I knew she was a good woman, strong enough to get over all the challenges that fate threw her way. But we're in a world of indefinite hardship, and we keep on surviving every day," Duke said, feeling melancholy.
After some time, we hear strong footsteps shaking the ground. Sergeant Gregory drives slowly as the surroundings are covered with fog. We can't see anything outside until the fog clears a bit. I peek through a small window, seeing a fat belly splattered with blood.
"It has a fat belly. What species of zombie is that?" I asked Sergeant Gregory.
"A Fleshy Zombie. That's what we encountered last time. We can't shoot it because the bullets will just bounce back at us. I don't know how they do it, but it seems like a defense mechanism. A Fleshy Zombie lives and eats brains or human flesh for many months, so they become fat," Sergeant Gregory informed us.
"So greedy, fleshy zombie," Yvette said.
"What's your plan?" Maggie asked.
"We can't shoot it. Maybe we should just escape from it so no one gets harm," Sergeant Gregory said while driving. Unexpectedly, the Fleshy Zombie throws a huge rock, blocking our way.
"Not easy. Looks like the fleshy zombie noticed a moving vehicle," Yvette said as the Fleshy Zombie starts walking towards us.
"Any idea what its weakness is?" I asked them.
"Fleshy Zombies are fat; they can't run fast, but their footsteps shake the ground, just like what happened earlier. We can't shoot their belly or other fatty parts, but I think they're more vulnerable when shot in the head," Duke said.
"Good idea, but how can we shoot it if we can't see its head clearly?" I asked him.
"You can use the top of the military vehicle. A great sniper can do it," Sergeant Gregory said.
"I will kill the Fleshy Zombie," I said.
"But someone needs to catch the Fleshy Zombie's attention outside," Sergeant Gregory said.
"I'll do it," Yvette volunteered.
"No way, Yvette. It's risky out there," Maggie said, worried.
"Don't worry. I'm a valiant woman. I can offer my life to protect the people I love. I will use my sword to stab it in the feet. When it falls, Louis can clearly see its head and snipe it immediately," Yvette said.
"Roger that, Yvette," I said.
Yvette gets out of the military vehicle, holding her sword, and walks slowly toward the Fleshy Zombie. I immediately get up to the top of the military vehicle, preparing to shoot. Yvette stabs the Fleshy Zombie in the right foot, which is full of fat. At first, it doesn't seem hurt, but then it gets irritated, and we feel the ground shaking. Yvette tries to remove her sword from the foot, but it gets stuck. The Fleshy Zombie suddenly kicks Yvette a distance away, causing her head to bleed as she hits a huge rock.
Suddenly, Yvette runs back to the Fleshy Zombie, picks up her sword, and removes it. She stabs the Fleshy Zombie in the left foot right away, causing it to become more irritated and slowly fall. I immediately see its head and snipe it, causing it to blow out, killing it. Yvette, holding her sword, smiles at us. Maggie decides to get out to help her, but as the Fleshy Zombie gradually falls, it falls on Yvette, causing her to die. Maggie and I feels shock and can't move after what happened. Maggie can't accept it and tries to approach the Fleshy Zombie, but Sergeant Gregory stops her, hugging her tightly while sobbing. We killed the Fleshy Zombie, but we lost Yvette, the most valiant woman we ever met.
Maggie and Sergeant Gregory return immediately as zombies start approaching, and I get down from the top of the military vehicle.
"What happened? Where is Yvette?" Duke asked us, confused, sitting beside Allie, who is still unconscious.
"Yvette couldn't make it," I informed him, feeling melancholy after what happened. Sergeant Gregory continues driving. After several hours, Maggie is still in tears and can't speak.
"Maggie, I know you're hurting, but Yvette sacrificed herself to save us. I didn't know she would smile at us for the last time," I said softly and hug her.
