After three days, I receive a reply from Dr. Addison to the email I sent.
Dear Maggie and Sergeant Gregory,
Thanks for letting me know that you're all surviving. Sergeant Gregory Ryder, you're one of the greatest soldiers I've ever met. We're still here in the Safe Zone I built in Arizona, which still has the highest survival rate among all the states. I hope to meet you here with the remaining capsules. I'm grateful for your determination to accomplish the mission. Don't worry, the zombie outbreak will end soon.
From Dr. Addison.
Maggie's POV
We arrive in Gallup, New Mexico, at 10:00 AM. Sergeant Gregory tells us we're near in Arizona. Duke notices Allie's hand move slightly. He realizes she's regaining consciousness. We're thrilled that Allie is waking up after a long time, and Duke hugs her immediately.
"I love you, Allie," Duke said softly.
"I love you too, Duke," Allie replied, still feeling a bit of a headache.
"Allie, you're back! We missed you!" I exclaimed happily, hugging her.
"What happened to me? I feel like I've slept for a week," Allie said.
"Don't worry about it. The most important thing is that you're conscious now," I reassured her.
"Wait... where are Akira and Yvette?" Allie asked.
"I dreamt we were riding a roller coaster together and laughing," Allie added.
"Akira and Yvette didn't make it," I informed her gently.
"But why? What happened to them?" Allie asked, her eyes filling with tears.
"While we were saving you in the woods, Akira was killed by a hunter who threw a spear at her chest. Yvette died three days ago after a fleshy zombie fell on her. I'm so sorry," I explained, hugging her with tears in my eyes.
"I can't believe it all happened. I remember now... an aerial zombie took me into the air. I was screaming for help, and a hunter threw a spear into its wings, causing me to fall into the trees. As I was losing consciousness, a group of hunters took me. Now I wake up knowing that Akira and Yvette are gone," Allie realized, in tears. Duke hugs her tightly.
After some time, while Sergeant Gregory is driving slowly, a horde of zombies approaches us in the distance. Louis immediately climbs to the top of the military vehicle and uses his monocular to get a better look.
"You won't believe it; a large number of Four-Armed zombies are heading our way," Louis informed us. Allie grabs the monocular to take another look.
"It looks like they're migrating somewhere," Allie observed.
"That's what the news said about a new species of zombie called Four-Armed," I added.
"What's our plan?" Duke asked.
Sergeant Gregory orders Duke and Louis to keep watch and shoot the approaching zombies with their machine guns and sniper rifles. Allie is instructed to throw her grenades as soon as the zombies get close. Sergeant Gregory and I ready our assault rifles, preparing to shoot. Our goal is to protect Charlie at all costs.
Sergeant Gregory drives slowly towards the horde of Four-Armed zombies. Duke and Louis start shooting from the top of the military vehicle, aiming for the zombies' heads. Sergeant Gregory and I shoot from the right and left windows with our assault rifles, taking out several zombies. Allie throws a grenade into a cluster of zombies, causing an explosion. She throws another, but a zombie unintentionally kicks it, and it explodes near our vehicle, causing it to flip over.
We're injured from the explosion. I feel terrible pain but worry more about Charlie, who is bleeding from his head and crying in pain. I stop the bleeding with a piece of cloth and grab the container with the capsules. Allie, Duke, and Louis are feeling terrible pain, and we quickly get out as the military vehicle collapses. Suddenly, more Four-Armed zombies approach us. We're low on bullets and in bad condition, running out of time. We start running, shooting the remaining bullets at the zombies chasing us.
"You have to go now. I'll hold them off," Sergeant Gregory said, breathing heavily.
"No, don't, please, Uncle Greg!" I shouted, tears streaming down my face, with Charlie crying beside me.
"Maggie, you need to survive. Take care of Charlie. I love you two," Sergeant Gregory said softly, his eyes filled with tears. I hug him tightly for the last time, and Charlie joins in, hugging him too.
"Charlie, be a good boy and stick with your sister always," Sergeant Gregory said, handing Charlie a chocolate bar from his pocket.
"Take care of my niece and my boy, Louis," Sergeant Gregory said softly.
"Roger that," Louis replied, saluting him. The Four-Armed zombies are getting closer.
"Go, hurry now, please!" Sergeant Gregory shouted. I can't bear to leave him, but Louis pulls me away, and we run.
Sergeant Gregory shoots the zombies coming our way, sacrificing himself to save us. I can't accept it, watching him get overwhelmed by the Four-Armed zombies as we run. I remember all the moments we had together with Charlie. He was the best soldier and uncle I've ever met.
