Work Text:

I'm gonna take my time
Watch something black and white
Old movies get it right
Oh it's a wonderful life
Breakfast in bed
Dinner with friends
Isn't it always the little things
That make you feel good?

(...)

'Cause sometimes unbelievable
Gets lost underneath it all
Nothing you see is what you get
There's colour in the ordinary
Each time you begin to fall
Hold onto something beautiful
Everything feels better
When you colour in the ordinary

I hope you find your wonderful today

Lauren was cleaning up the kitchen. Annoyingly, she had forgotten to turn on the fully loaded dishwasher after lunch, so she now had to wash up the mess by hand. She didn't really mind though – she quite liked how the repetitive nature of doing the washing up let her mind wander sometimes. She could hear the TV from the living room, where Camila was probably half asleep by now, passed out after having finished off an ungodly amount of pasta. It was a peaceful Tuesday night, Lauren's favourite day of the week. After all, it was Telly Tuesday, as Camila liked to call it.

Telly Tuesday was a little tradition they had started ages ago and consisted of quite literally just watching telly together on a Tuesday. Or, rather, having dinner together in front of the TV on a Tuesday. That was it – nothing more, nothing less. Any other day they would actually eat at their dining table, which sounded fancier than it was.

When they had planned the house, both Camila and Lauren wanted to make sure it would end up being a home for them, with every corner of the place serving a purpose and being used. They had spent too much time in other people's stiff dining or sitting rooms that were clearly never used except for when guests came over. Lauren had always hated feeling like she was sitting in an art exhibition rather than someone's actual house. Luckily, Camila was much the same – neither of them had ever felt the need to show off that they could afford designer furniture or an entire redesign every few months. All they had wanted was a home

While Camila loved their entire house, the kitchen remained her favourite part. It had turned out exactly how they used to imagine it, back when they were dreaming up a future together. Warm wood, the cupboards a mix of open shelves and simple cabinet doors painted a cosy colour that reigned somewhere between green, blue and grey, depending on the light falling through the wide windows facing the garden. It had an island, which was often cluttered with letters, used mugs, or shopping lists. Lauren knew it often bothered Camila when it got too messy, but she never complained about it; after all, the occasional mayhem meant that the space was actually lived in.

Their favourite part, however, was the dining table. It was tucked into a corner of the room, surrounded on two sides by a comfortable bench, the skylight above it bathing it in soft light. It was big enough for dinners or game nights with friends or family, but not too long to make them feel lonely the rest of the time, when it was just the two of them by themselves. They loved using their dinners as a designated time to sit down without distractions, eat and talk about whatever was on their minds.
