Work Text:

Lauren had always known Camila was her soulmate.

Aged four when the Cabello's first moved in next door and Camila, a shy three-year-old asked for help with her sandcastles. Lauren had looked over at her mom, confused about where this kid had come from, but then said kid had said please, the "pl" getting lost between her lips, and Lauren had shrugged and helped her.

Aged seven, with six-year-old Camila following her around everywhere, always reaching for her hand so Lauren wouldn't go too fast for her little feet.

Lauren wouldn't anyway, she liked having Camila with her. She didn't have too many friends and her new baby sister occupied a lot of her mother's time now, so she rather spent her days with Camila.

Aged thirteen when her classmate Brad asked if they could be boyfriend and girlfriend, Lauren had been confused, then Brad had started talking about soulmates, about how he was sure in a few years they'd see each other's name appear on their arms.

Surely.

Lauren had only shaken her head, said sorry and gone to find Camila.

Aged sixteen, when Camila, now fifteen, had kissed Shawn. He was Camila's classmate and they'd been hanging out for the last couple of weeks.

Lauren wanted to scream, wanted to go and push Shawn and his white shirt into the mud.

But then Camila told her he was her boyfriend now, he'd said so, and Lauren wouldn't be mean to him if Camila liked him.

She pulled the sleeve of her shirt down. Only a few more months and she'd have Camila's name on her left arm and she'd tell Camila then. Show her they were meant to be.

On the night of her birthday, Lauren didn't bother going to bed. She just busied herself with playing Super Mario, stealing glances at her arm, waiting for Camila's name to appear.

Camila had broken up with Shawn after just a few weeks, telling him she didn't really feel anything for him and that she might be into girls.

Lauren was a girl.

She must've fallen asleep despite her best efforts, because she woke with a scream, everything dark outside and her game stuck on the Game Over screen.

There wasn't enough light in the room to see properly, but there was definitely something on her arm. She scrambled to sit up, turn on the lamp on the side table.

Her eyes wouldn't cooperate at first, still blurry from sleep.

No, that couldn't be true.
