Keigo had thought up a lot of different ways the meeting would go. Dabi cursing at him? Easy enough to deflect. Dabi attacking him? He was in quirk suppressants so that shouldn't be an issue. Dabi being a fanboy? Highly unlikely but amusing to imagine.
He didn't expect for Dabi to close the door in his face. Honestly? Rude.
Keigo's smile froze on his face as his eye twitched for a moment. He let out a long breath through his nose before giving his head a little shake and knocking again.
"Are all heroes idiots?" he heard sarcastically from within the room. "A door in the face means fuck off."
Keigo put his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels, letting the fake smile fall off his face as he contemplated his next move.
He tried to imagine things from Dabi's point of view. Having yet another hero show up out of the blue and force their way into his life probably wouldn't sit well with the man. If he wanted Dabi to start trusting him, he had to show him he wasn't like the others. That he would give him the choice to talk with him or not.
So be it.
Hawks stretched his arms up and turned, heading over to the couch and flopping down with his wings spread lazily out at his sides. If Dabi wasn't going to talk to him, he'd at least help Aizawa out by keeping an eye on the apartment. Snatch was really too easy to convince to swap places.
His eyes flicked to the clock on the wall. He didn't know where Aizawa had gone this morning, so there was no telling how much time he had before the man returned. And wouldn't that be a fun conversation.
Keigo pulled out his phone and lazily scrolled. After a few minutes, he glanced up through the tops of his eyes as he heard Dabi's door open. And then the man himself warily came out of his room, sending a glance around the apartment.
"Can I help you find something?" Keigo said lightly, lifting his head and giving Dabi a toothy smile.
Dabi scowled at him. "Fuck off," he snapped back. After a beat, he added on, "Where's the sand bitch?"
Ah, Keigo thought. Looking for Snatch.
"I take it you and he don't get along?" Hawks replied with a smirk.
Dabi stopped at the edge of the living room, leaning against the wall with arms crossed. "What gave it away?" he deadpanned.
"I can't imagine why," Hawks replied. "What with his great personality and all."
Dabi snorted in what Hawks hoped was amusement, but didn't look any more comfortable. His whole body was laced with tension. Fair, for a guy who didn't know what to expect.
Keigo sat up and pulled his wings in so he wasn't taking up the whole couch. "Don't worry," he continued, putting his phone away into his pocket. "I swapped with the guy, so he's gone."
Dabi raised an eyebrow but didn't reply.
"Anyway," Keigo pressed on, putting his charming smile back in place. "I've been wanting to meet you!"
He watched as Dabi's face seemed to close off.
"Why?" the man growled.
"Do I need a reason?" Hawks replied cheekily.
"Everyone has a reason."
"Damn, are you always this bad at conversations?" Keigo teased.
"Only when talking to idiots," Dabi snarled back.
Hawks leaned back on the couch and kicked his feet up onto the coffee table. "Aizawa asked me to look into your background," he answered bluntly.
Dabi frowned, eyes kept firmly on Hawks's every movement.
