Two days later and Dabi still didn't feel like it was real.
Like any of it was real.
The announcement of UA's case against both Endeavor and the Commission had thrown the entirety of society into a tailspin far faster than the League or Overhaul ever had.
Heroes against heroes, Dabi thought dryly. It's almost pathetic that it's come to this.
Pathetic that it took this long. Pathetic that it got this far. Pathetic that it all started with those bastards Twice and Toga being annoying as hell.
Because if they hadn't, he probably wouldn't have gone looking through Overhaul's base.
Because if they hadn't, he wouldn't have found Eri.
At the thought, Dabi flicked his eyes up to land on her across the room.
She had managed to convince Aizawa to let the three of them–her, Dabi, and Keigo–go spend time in the 1A dorm because she wanted to hang out with Jirou. With supervision, of course. So now she was happily talking away looking at Jirou's phone with her while Present Mic looked on.
What Aizawa himself had gotten up to, Dabi wasn't sure. The man had been much more serious since the announcement, spending almost any free time on his laptop either recruiting people to their side–without revealing too much of course–or reviewing evidence. He had gotten a phone call that morning from Nighteye. Dabi suspected they were probably together now working on the case.
Aizawa was going to run himself ragged. For Dabi...
Dabi shook his head. Nope. Not time to think about feelings right now, he thought, focusing back on Eri.
And while Dabi prided himself on introducing Eri to punk rock, he was glad that Mic found a way to reject Eri's proposal to blast "whatever me and my friends wanna listen to" through his shoulder speakers. The last thing he wanted was to endure whatever the rest of class 1A thought was good music.
He...he hoped Eri was actually still happy. With the case announcement, the entire country would be looking at UA. What would it say? Would this backfire? Dabi would never forgive himself if everything ended up going to shit and they lost the one chance of a happy life Eri had gotten here.
His attention was broken by an over the top laugh.
With an unimpressed eyebrow raised, Dabi's eyes slid over to Keigo. While he had initially stuck to Dabi's side, his eyes had sparked with interest when that bird kid in Shoto's class showed up.
Poor kid, Dabi mused, watching the way Keigo was laughing. Idiot probably just made some horrible bird-themed joke.
He was glad that Keigo looked more at-ease. The guy had been on edge since the whole "Endeavor tried to murder Dabi" and "the Commission threatened to kill the people I care about" thing. Which is totally fair.
Dabi could tell something still felt off, though. It was almost like the longer the conversation with the bird kid went on, the more tense Keigo got.
He frowned. Keigo looked...not great. Honestly, Dabi wasn't really sure how much the guy had been sleeping.
He ignored the voice in the back of his head calling him a hypocrite. So what if he hadn't slept either? It's not like anyone would be able to see eyebags. Not with how his scars had gotten worse after the fight.
If he had to try and find something good that came out of nearly burning himself alive, at least he had managed to utterly decimate the tracking anklet he had been wearing. And yes, while it had saved his ass when the League had taken him, he hadn't realized just how...caged it made him feel. Like he was still under scrutiny. Like he couldn't be trusted.
