Chapter Text

All things considered, the trial was off to an okay start.

Aizawa still had to suppress the urge to tear Shimizu's head off, but his pride at how Dabi handled himself on the witness stand helped balance that out. While he could have done without the snarky comments, Dabi kept himself in check and didn't rise to Shimizu's goading. At least not yet, anyway.

It helped that they knew what to expect from the man this time around, and were better prepared for his hits below the belt.

That being said, Aizawa didn't miss the way Dabi's entire body tensed when his sister was called to the stand.

Fuyumi entered their peripheral vision, pushing through the small wooden gate to cross the floor and climb the steps to the witness stand. Her eyes were downcast as she moved, hands clasped together nervously in front of her.

As she sat and lifted her head, she sent a glance towards their table. Dabi sat up slightly straighter and held her gaze. Aizawa shifted his own attention back to Nighteye as the man walked over to stand before her.

"Fuyumi Todoroki," he began. "Would you please state your relation to the plaintiff and defendant?"

Fuyumi nodded and leaned forward to speak into the microphone. She recoiled slightly as a whine of feedback sounded through the speakers. Once it quieted, she spoke.

"My name is Fuyumi, I am Touya Todoroki's sister and Enji Todoroki's daughter."

"Why are you testifying today?"

Fuyumi sent a quick look towards the defendant's table, and Aizawa caught the dark look Endeavor was sending her way. She swallowed and turned her attention back towards Nighteye.

"I want to protect my brothers. And that means testifying against my father," she said quietly.

Not everyone would notice, but having worked so closely with Nighteye, Aizawa could see the way his expression softened ever so slightly. From the way Fuyumi seemed to take a deep breath, he thinks she saw it too.

There was movement in the corner of Aizawa's eye as Dabi tilted his head down to stare at his hands. Aizawa wished he could tell what was going through his head.

"Would you mind describing what you are protecting them from?"

"My father is a...harsh man," Fuyumi began. She kept her hands hidden below the stand, likely to hide any fidgeting she needed to do to keep calm. "Things seemed to start out fine, but the more Touya's quirk manifested, he became...obsessive."

"In what ways?"

Fuyumi shifted in her seat, looking uncomfortable as she pressed on.

"He was training with Touya practically every time he was home. In the mornings before he left–in the evenings when he got back."
