CHIARA FELT WEIGHTLESS. Her vision blurred. Claws grabbed her arms and lifted her into the air. Below, train wheels squealed and metal crashed. Glass shattered. Passengers screamed. If she ever made a burn book, eagles would be the first to talk shit about. When her eyesight cleared, she saw the beast that was carrying her aloft. It had the body of a panther—sleek, black, and feline—with the wings and head of an eagle. Its eyes glowed blood-red. She managed to make out Percy who was in the same state as her.
Chiara cursed. The monster’s front talons were wrapped around her arms like steel bands. She couldn’t free herself by reaching for her sword. She rose higher and higher in the cold wind. She had no idea where the monster was taking her, but she was pretty sure she wouldn’t like it when she got there. Therefore she did everything in her power to avoid it. She tried creating shadows in order to blind the creature but it was no use. For the first time in years, even the smallest shadow felt impossible to create.
Whether it was because they were at the land beyond the gods or because the monster held onto her hand for dear life blocking her abilities, she was helpless. She yelled—mostly out of frustration. Then something whistled by her ear. An arrow sprouted from the monster’s neck. The creature shrieked and let go.
Chiara fell, crashing through tree branches until she slammed into a snowbank, Percy falling down next to her. She groaned, looking up at a massive pine tree she’d just shredded. She managed to stand. Nothing seemed broken. Frank stood to her left, shooting down the creatures as fast as he could. Hazel was at his back, swinging her sword at any monster that came close, but there were too many swarming around them—at least a dozen.
Percy drew Riptide, as she got Skotadi in her hands. She sliced the wing off one monster and sent it spiraling into a tree, then sliced through another that burst into dust. But the defeated ones began to re-form immediately.
“What are these things?” he yelled.
“Gryphons!” Hazel said. “We have to get them away from the train!”
Chiara saw what she meant. The train cars had fallen over, and their roofs had shattered. Tourists were stumbling around in shock. Chiara didn’t see anybody seriously injured, but the gryphons were swooping toward anything that moved. The only thing keeping them away from the mortals was a glowing gray warrior in camouflage—Frank’s pet spartus.
Once Percy mentioned it, Chiara glanced over and noticed Frank’s spear was gone. “Used your last charge?”
“Yeah.” Frank shot another gryphon out of the sky. “I had to help the mortals. The spear just dissolved.”
They nodded. She was disappointed, that was one less weapon they had at their disposal. Especially if her powers had truly stopped working due to the place they were Frank's warrior could come in handy and make up for her uselessness. But she didn’t fault Frank, he had done the right thing.
