Mary and Severus stared at the figure standing in the dimly lit corridor in complete horror. They should've been more careful. Mary knew that. Severus knew that. But during the months Mary had been practising with Severus, she had never seen anyone in that corridor when she was leaving after the lesson. Never before.
But there she was. Clary Josephine Smith was staring at them eyes wide open, an indecisive look on her face. At the same time, she too looked horrified. But she also seemed surprised and angry.
"Clary", Mary whispered, breaking the strangling silence which had been wrapped around the corridor ever since Severus had noticed Clary.
Clary didn't say a word. Slowly, she shook her head, a disapproving look taking a hold of her face. Mary swallowed. A million thoughts rushed into her head simultaneously as she wondered, what would be Clary's next move.
Was she going to tell Albus here and now? Was she going to sleep through the night and decide in the morning? Or not tell anyone but command Mary and Severus to stop? Or maybe, just maybe, was she going to be understanding? Was she going to understand the relationship between Mary and Severus? Afterall, if anyone should understand the difficulties of falling for someone they shouldn't be falling for, it was Clary. Well, falling for someone that the majority of people would disapprove.
"It's getting late", Clary finally said, her ice-cold voice sending shivers down Mary's spine. "We should get going."
Having said that, she walked right in front of Mary and Severus and grabbed Mary by the arm, locking her pale blue eyes with Severus' dark ones.
"Goodnight, Professor", she said, and started walking away from the raven-haired man.
Mary and Clary walked in complete silence for a couple of minutes, until Mary was finally brave enough to open her mouth.
"Clary", she started, but was immediately cut off by her best friend.
"How could you be so stupid?" Clary hissed, turning to face Mary. Her usually being rather sweet and cute, she now looked like a vicious polar bear.
"That man is using you, you know that right?" she continued without giving Mary a chance to respond. "How long has this been going on, anyway? And how FAR have you gone?"
Mary stared at Clary, unsure what to say. She hadn't gone exactly far with Severus. They had only kissed. But deducing from the look on Clary's face, even the thought of kissing Severus was too far. She had been understanding when Mary had confessed to her about her crush on Severus. But now that she had found out it had turned into much more than just a crush, she didn't seem to be understanding anymore.
"Well, how far?" Clary repeated, her jaw clenching as she pursed her lips into a thin white line. Mary drew a deep breath, attempting to steady her shaking breath before responding to Clary's question.
"It's nothing like that. We have only kissed", Mary explained. Mary's answer seemed to have erased Clary's worst ideas, as she seemed to slightly calm down after hearing Mary's clarification.
"Alright then", she sighed. "So, you haven't completely lost your mind."
The repeating accusations of Mary losing her mind were beginning to truly irritate her. Yes, having a relationship with a professor wasn't exactly a smart idea, but that didn't give Clary a right to repeatedly indicate that Mary was going crazy.
"No, I haven't", Mary said coldly. She knew it wasn't smart to get angry at Clary when she was in this position, but she couldn't help it. She had been wholly accepting about her relationship with Alison, even though they were both women. Why couldn't she do the same for her and Severus?
