The first week without Clary and Severus was the hardest thing Mary had gone through ever since her father had passed away. And even in death, there is one thing that makes it even easier than losing contact with someone.

Hope.

When someone dies, it is irreversible. There's no coming back. You will never see them again.

But when you lose contact with someone, there is always a possibility. Even if it so small that it is nearly impossible, it's still there. Lingering in the back of your mind every second of your day.

Even though it was Mary who ended the things between her and Clary, it was still painful. And still, she was absolutely certain that she couldn't speak to Clary unless she would make the deal between her, and Severus undone. Clary knew how hard it had been for Mary, losing almost everyone she loved. And she also knows how hard it is to love someone who you shouldn't be in love with.

Do I love Severus?

She had never before thought of that. She had never before asked such a question from herself. But the burning, choking sensation in her body told her that it wasn't just a crush. It was something stronger.

But was it love?

"I don't know", Mary sighed and rolled over in her bed. She had, once again, found herself in a situation where she needed a mother. Or even just a parent or an older sibling. For the past week, she had been lying sleeplessly in her bed, tossing and turning until the yawning Alison signalled her that it was morning.

Lately, Mary has been feeling like she's unsure of everything. She didn't know if she could ever forgive Clary. She didn't know if Clary would ever calm down, maybe even accept the connection between Mary and Severus. And Mary didn't know how strong that connection between her and Severus was. Was it strong enough to throw aside everything? Was she ready to sacrifice her reputation, her friendship, her future just for being able to be with Severus again?

And was it strong enough for Severus to do the same?

But she couldn't ask that from Severus. Clary had forbidden all contact between Mary and Severus. And even if she hadn't, Mary wasn't sure if she was brave enough to ask such questions from Severus.

After a couple of hours, came morning again. Alison yawned and stretched, wished Mary and Clary good morning and started dressing up. Stiffly, Mary and Clary wished Alison a good morning as well and started gathering their clothes and schoolbooks.

To Mary's luck, the Quidditch match between Slytherin and Gryffindor was only a couple of weeks away, which meant that Clary was rarely in the Slytherin common room. Only time where she had to tolerate Clary's company and attempt to behave like a normal human being towards her, were the lessons. Without question, the Potions lessons were the most difficult for Mary. And what Mary had concluded from the way Severus and Clary behaved, it was difficult for them as well. During the yesterday's double-lesson, Mary started to suspect that even other students had begun noticing that there was an odd atmosphere when Mary, Clary and Severus were in the same room.

"So, are you ready for breakfast? Remember to pack your History of Magic books", Alison reminded Mary.

"Yeah", both Clary and Mary mumbled. Even though they haven't spoken a word to each other for the past week, they still had breakfast, lunch and dinner with Alison in the Great Hall. But apart from breakfast, lunch and dinner, Mary and Clary didn't sit near each other unless it was an order from a teacher.

"Hey, Mary", started Fred Weasley, who was walking next to Mary by the Black Lake. She, the twins and Emily had decided to go for a walk before Mary and Emily's double lesson of Potions.
