The night of the Hallowe'en feast was interesting, to say the least.
After leaving Severus' personal chamber, yes, still untouched, Mary had snug inside the Slytherin common room, where she was met with a horrified Clary. To not give a wrong impression, Alison had been scared as well. Really scared. But she hadn't lost her mind. Clary, on the other hand, was weeping and screaming when Mary walked through the entrance to the Slytherin common room.
Seeing the horrified look on Severus' face in the Great Hall after Alison had said that Mary had gone to her secret place, the two Slytherin had put the pieces together and realized that Mary's secret spot must be somewhere in the dungeons. Out of her mind, Clary had tried to run down the dungeons and find Mary, but Professor McGonagall had caught her even before she had managed to leave the Great Hall.
"Where do you think you're going?" she had asked with an angry expression on her face. It wasn't the usual kind of anger one might see on her face whilst disobeying the rules. No, it was much scarier.
"Professor, I think Mary's somewhere in the dungeons. I have to go and find her", Clary tried to explain breathlessly, her entire body shaking with fear. After hearing Clary's words, the look on McGonagall's face shifted. She didn't say a word for a while, she just looked at Clary with a new kind of worry in her eyes. After getting her voice back, she ordered Clary and Alison to go and find the Slytherin prefect while the teachers took care of the troll.
A couple of hours later, inside the Slytherin common room, Clary threw her arms around Mary and wiped her tears to her shirt.
"I'm so sorry! I am so fucking sorry!" she cried like a baby, pressing her fingers deep into Mary's skin. Confused and surprised, Mary tried to escape her embrace, but it was useless. Mary might be taller than Clary, but she was still one of the Chasers in the Slytherin Quidditch team.
"It's okay..." Mary mumbled, looking at Alison with a helpless expression on her face. Alison, who found the whole situation somewhat amusing, let Mary struggle for a couple more minutes before gently pulling Clary away from Mary and letting the dark-haired Slytherin gasp for air.
After Clary had calmed down, the three Slytherins sat down by the fireplace and wrapped themselves into warm, dark green blankets.
"Did Professor Snape find you?" asked Clary, her voice still stuffy after all that crying. Alison, who hadn't said a word after Mary had entered the room, shifted her position in her chair. There was a peculiar sparkle of interest in her deep blue eyes.
"He did, yes", Mary started, finding the subject slightly uncomfortable after making out with him just a half an hour ago. "And I spoke to him. And we went to his room", she added, a defiant glimmer in her forest-like eyes.
Clary looked at Mary, her eyes mirroring the discomfort in Mary's, but didn't say anything. Alison, on the other hand, crossed her fingers and rested her head on top of them, an uninterpretable smirk on her lips.
"You went to his room?" she said. Mary turned her eyes to hers and nodded.
The smirk on Alison's red lips widened as her eyes twinkled. The raven-haired Slytherin leaned back in her armchair and tilted her dainty head.
"And?" was the only word coming out of her soft lips.
Mary looked back and forth from Alison to Clary, trying to comprehend what the two girls were thinking. By the look on their faces, it seemed that they thought of the worst.
"We talked", Mary blurted, hoping that her answer would be satisfying enough for Alison's hungry eyes. Those eyes, like the midnight sky, pierced straight to Mary's heart as she pondered on Mary's words. After a couple of minutes, Alison, once again, leaned in.
"And?" she repeated.
Mary was aghast. For the first time ever since she had met the black haired Slytherin, she noticed the mischievous sparkle in her eyes. It wasn't a kind of sparkle one would see in the eyes of the Weasley twins. No, it was a different kind of sparkle. A kind of sparkle that told: "I know. Don't try to trick me, I know."
"And... And we kissed", Mary admitted, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. She could feel Clary's ice-cold eyes boring through her skin as she looked at Mary.
Mary tried to say something, but she had no voice. She had no words in which she could explain everything that had happened between her and Severus. Not in a way that would make Clary understand.
"You kissed?" Clary said slowly, her eyes narrowing into two thin lines. Mary swallowed and nodded, still trying to come up with an answer.
Clary stared at her for a couple more minutes before slightly nodding.
"I see", she said, stood up and started walking towards the Girls' Dormitory. It was only then when Mary managed to find her courage.
"Severus did say a one thing", she spoke to Clary's back, making the young Slytherin stop and slightly turn her head towards Mary and Alison.
"Oh?" she said, "and what might this one thing be?"
"Fuck the deal."
Clary stood still for a moment while both Mary and Alison held their breath (although at this point, Mary had started to suspect that this too was just a part of an act in order to fit in). Then, Clary turned her eyes back towards the entrance of the Girls' Dormitory and disappeared behind the door.
Mary, who found the whole situation quite confusing, let her gaze wander around the space until landing on the comforting flame dancing inside the fireplace. Tonight, she had seen her two dearest friends in a whole different light. Alison, who Mary had always thought as a gentle but curious soul, seemed to be something wholly different. And Clary, who Mary had held as her closest friend ever since entering the Hogwarts Castle, had another side to herself as well. Yes, they hadn't been talking for weeks, and the way she had reacted after finding about her and Severus' relationship had surprised Mary. But the coldness within her voice only ten minutes after crying her eyes out made Mary wonder, how deep the anger within Clary's body ran.
