Chapter nine~

Jillian's POV

**~**

I opened my eyes and was surrounded by darkness. I was lying down on a cold floor, my right foot soaked in water.

I was at Logan's freaky healing springs. But how did I get here? I slowly sat up and paused for a secound in thought and was alarmed to hear yelling voices.

"You had one job! All you had to do was keep her occupied while keeping an eye on her." shouted an unfamiliar voice.

"I never asked for it Jason. I didn't want to be such a key part in this in the first place. After the last accident—I wasn’t ready for this yet."

That was Logan's voice. He sounded annoyed. He continued, his voice rising higher and higher,

"Because of your stupid orders, now look what happened! She ended up breaking her leg! And shivering in the cold for who knows how long. She could have gotten hit by a fucking car!"

Wow. I've never heard Logan so angry before. He was furious.

After a long moment of pin-dropping silence, approaching footsteps started coming towards me and I heard someone crouch down to where I was sitting.

"Hello Jillian," someone said, an unfamiliar smiling face staring at me, "my name is Jason. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."

Jason had dirty blond hair, in the messy, gelled style. His sharp jawline outlined and intensified his deep but playful brown eyes. He had a slight accent of some sort, I'm pretty sure it's was British. He looked around Logan’s age—couldn't be more than 20.

"Hi." I said timidly.

"I think I owe you an explanation, since Logan here screwed it up."

Someone threw something at the wall in the shadows.

Jason ignored it and continued, carefully choosing his words, "Jillian it may be a lot to take in but you need to understand that your-your condition, of being invisible to the world, it's not exactly... unique, per say."

My mouth dropped open in shock.

"Are you saying, that th—there's others—"

"Yup" he said, popping the p. His eyes twinkled in amusement at my bewildered expression.

"There are more people out there like you, not many, but more than you'd expect. Logan I are two of these types of people. You are a third."

If my mouth could have dropped any lower, I'm sure it would have.

Logan surfaced uncertainly from the shadows.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Logan— the Logan who I had spent the past couple days with—was the same as me. He was a Nobody too.

It explained why no one stopped when he got punched in the face. It explained how he noticed me when nobody else did. It was so obvious, I felt stupid for not seeing it before.

I looked over at Logan feeling betrayed that he had kept something so important from me. I looked up at him, so disappointed, and lowered my eyes to the stone floor, willing for it to open up and swallow me whole. This was not the Logan I knew.

He could see the hurt flash across my eyes at my realization of his betrayal and he opened his mouth, clearly trying to excuse what he had done to me, but Jason cut him off.

"—Anyways," continued Jason, "The correct term for people like us is Cipher. It's a Cipher's duty to keep an eye out for others with similar symptoms in the world. I'm the one who discovered you." He looked happy and beamed, clearly proud. "About a month ago, I first noticed you at the Eaton Center Mall."

My face blushed red and guilt overtook my features.

"If I recall correctly, you were carrying an ice cream cone when suddenly, this man pushed passed you, knocking the ice-cream from your hands, making it land on his white sweater. The ice-cream was melting by the secound and he didn't seem to realize in the slightest. It was the funniest sight I've ever seen." He mused, "Only when he was about 50 meters from you did he begin to freak out that suddenly an ice-cream cone had appeared and that his new sweater was drenched with the green sticky stuff. He accused his friend and stormed out of the mall."

Jason was laughing now at recalling the memory and the corners of my mouth slightly curved into a smile. The man's expression was pretty funny that day.

"You have a beautiful smile," Jason said looking into my eyes and tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "I hope I get to see it more often."

My cheeks turned a tomato red. I've never gotten a compliment before. Damn you, blush! I mentally cursed myself.

Beside Jason, I could see Logan's fists clench so tightly, I thought they would just explode. Is that jealousy? I shook my head and stood to my feet.

I shouldn't care.

I was pissed off that I had trusted him so much, enjoyed being his friend. We joked and laughed together, the last couple days were the most fun I've ever had in my life with another human being.

After having this amazing friendship, he wasn't even able to return the trust and refused to tell me anything.

Yet here was this stranger. Who cared for my wellbeing so much that he explained everything to me without so much as hesitating. What a nice guy.

Looking at Jason with soft eyes, I told him, "Thank you for saving me and bringing me here. If you hadn't of shown up, I most likely would have been stuck out there all night." I emphasized the last words, hoping that maybe Logan would feel at least a small amount of guilt for leaving me.

I continued, "and also for explaining things to me. I had no clue what was going on. I was scared and worried. I felt completely helpless and—" I paused, looking directly in to Logan's eyes, shooting him daggers of hurt so that he might see how badly I was affected by his actions. "—betrayed."

"No problem Jillian," I turned back to face Jason and he was smiling his million dollar smile at me, "anything for you."
