~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I waited. That’s all there was to do. I couldn’t recall how long I had been trapped in this concrete box but it had been long enough to the point where my stomach was writhing in pain from hunger. There were no windows so I had no way of telling what time it was or count how many days I’ve been here. My body was frail—so very, very weak. The only time I actually saw anyone was when I had to beg to be let out to use the bathroom or when they gave me a glass of water to drink. Both things were provided or escorted to me by the same guard.
The guard was a new face, one I did not recognize. He must have been in his early twenties. His dark brown hair was army buzz cut and his black uniform was spotless and neat. Around his waist was a black belt with a radio and a holster hiding some sort of army-issued hand gun. He acted very formal and neutral around me but on one occasion I swear I could have seen a look of pity quickly cross his face. At least there was one human being capable of feeling compassion in this facility.
I could only guess that he was the guard stationed outside of my room to watch over me—probably to make sure I didn’t have any more witty escape attempts up my sleeve.
I stood up and paced around my room. A surveillance camera watched me from the corner ceiling of the room. It was eerie—knowing that they were watching my every move. I had to do something. Sitting on the floor next to the door, I turned my head to face the door away from the camera’s view.
“What are they planning on doing to me?” My voice successfully came out quivering. “Are they just going to keep me locked in here until I starve to death?”
No response.
I sighed.
“Please. I’m so hungry. I want to get out of here. I didn’t even do anything wrong. I’m just an ordinary girl.” I begged.
Nothing.
“You know that this is wrong. What they’re doing to me is inhumane.” I continued.
“That’s because you’re not human.” A muffled voice answered from behind the door.
Finally.
“Is that what they’re telling you?” I whispered, my nose crinkling in confusion. “I…I’m different, but I’m very much so human. You have to believe me. I never asked to be different. I didn’t even know what was wrong with me until a few days ago.”
The other side of the door was silent.
Sighing, I tried again to get the guards attention.
“I was on vacation with my parents in Florida. Everything was fine,” I paused, “but in the past week I have been kidnapped, seen a person get shot, witnessed someone getting most likely beaten to death and then been kidnapped again. Now I’m in a facility where I haven’t been fed in days, only given a glass of water to drink and had to beg every time I’ve needed to go to the bathroom.”
Still no response.
“Please,” I whimpered and a tear rolled down my cold cheek, “I just want to get out of here.”
