episode four ; we hitch a ride with
dead confederates

BEATRICE WAS SURPRISED when she saw her makeup wasn't ruined from the water. she looked through her different makeup products as the waves tossed the lifeboat up and down.

"rest," annabeth said suddenly. "you're gonna need it."

beatrice turned her head. she saw percy was finally awake. she let out a sigh of relief, putting her makeup aside and touching her hand to his forehead. ever since she stayed at his place with his mother, beatrice and percy grew a brother-sister bond so they were pretty protective of each other.

"tyson...?" percy looked up at beatrice.

the adult shook her head, a frown upon her lips as she brushed percy's damp, blond hair away from his face. "percy, i'm really sorry."

they were silent while the waves continued to toss them up and down.

"he may have survived," annabeth said halfheartedly. "i mean, fire can't kill him."

percy nodded, but he didn't say anything. beatrice put a hand on his shoulder and rubbed her thumb over it for a moment.

waves lapped the boat. while beatrice fixed up her makeup and hair, annabeth showed percy some of the things she'd salvaged from the wreckage— hermes's thermos (now empty), a ziplock bag full of ambrosia, a couple of sailors' shirts, and a bottle of dr. pepper. she'd fished him out the water and found his knapsack, bitten in half by scylla's teeth. most of his stuff had floated away, but he still had hermes's bottle of multivitamins, and of course he had riptide. the ballpoint pen always appeared back in his back pocket no matter where he lost it.

they sailed for hours. now that they were in the sea of monsters, the water glittered a more brilliant green, like hydra acid. the wind smelled fresh and salty, but it carried a strange metallic scent, too— as if a thunderstorm were coming. or something even more dangerous.

no matter which way they turned, the sun seemed to shine straight into beatrice's small mirror that she held. they took turns sipping from the dr. pepper, shading themselves with the sail as best as they could. and they talked about percy's latest dream of grover.

by annabeth's estimate, they had less than twenty-four hours to find grover, assuming his dream was accurate, and assuming the cyclops polyphemus didn't change his mind and try to marry grover earlier.
