One of the officers turns his head toward me, his expression solemn. I can see the regret in his eyes as he slowly walks over to me. The officer kneels down beside me and speaks in a gentle tone. "I'm sorry, honey," he says, placing a hand on my shoulder.
The officer's words hit me like a punch to the gut. I can feel my chest tighten, and my mind races with disbelief. "No..." I manage to whisper, tears streaming down my face. "No, it can't be... she can't be..."
His eyes hold a solemn gaze as he looks at me, his hand still on my shoulder. "I know it's hard to accept, but there's nothing we can do now." He says softly, his voice filled with genuine empathy. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
I sit there on the floor, feeling the weight of grief and disbelief bear down on me. The officer remains beside me, his hand a small comfort on my shoulder. The room is eerily quiet, the only sound being the low whispers of the other officers as they continue to discuss the situation. I sit there on the floor, dazed and in shock, as the reality of the situation slowly sinks in.
My thoughts race, and I remember Alastor. My heart sinks even more as I think about how he'll take the news, how devastated he'll be. The thought of his pain only adds to my own anguish. "Oh god," I mutter to myself, covering my face with my hands.
The officer leans in a bit closer, concern etched across his face. "Is there someone we can call for you, ma'am? Someone who can come and be with you right now?" He asks gently.
"Her son." I say as I remove my hands from my face and look at the officer. The officer nods understandingly, his expression sympathetic. "Alright, can you give me his contact information? We'll need to get in touch with him and inform him of what's happened."
"Mhm." I mutter before giving him both of Alastor's numbers. The officer takes down the numbers I provide, making note of them before placing them in his pocket. He gives me a reassuring smile before standing up.
"We'll get in touch with him right away," he tells me. "You just take a moment. We'll handle everything else." I just nod as I begin to zone out.
The officers continue to work around me, their voices a faint hum in the background as I retreat into my own thoughts. My mind is a tangled mess of grief, disbelief, and worry.
Time seems to warp and distort as I sit there, lost in my thoughts. The world around me fades into a blur, and I become increasingly detached from my surroundings. The weight of my grief and the shock of the situation create a mental fog that clouds my senses.
It takes me a moment to even register the officer's touch as he tries to get my attention. "Miss...?" The officer says gently, his voice cutting through the fog in my mind.
"Sorry what?" I say hoarsely. He smiles softly, his voice filled with understanding. "It's okay," he assures me. "I just wanted to let you know that we've contacted Alastor. He's on his way here. One of my colleagues is waiting for him at the entrance to give him an update."
"Okay." I respond softly. The officer nods and gives me a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Just take it easy while you wait," he says before moving out of my line of sight.
As time slowly ticks by, the silence in the house becomes almost deafening. My thoughts continue to race, and the anticipation for Alastor's arrival hangs heavily in the air. No sounds, no distractions - just the weight of the situation and the waiting.
My mind struggles to make sense of the situation, searching for an explanation. Mrs. Hartfelt was fine, she was healthy and active just the day before. What had happened to her? How could she just be... gone?
The questions swirl around in my head, mingling with the grief and disbelief that already consume me. I take deep, shaky breaths, desperately trying to keep myself composed. My hands shake as I attempt to wipe away the relentless tears that flow down my face.
