When she said I'd be on festival commitee, I thought that entailed just the end of the year festival.
Not football games.
More specifically, Friday after school football games.
"I'm about to say I got hurt on the job because I genuinely don't want to be doing this," Milo said as I helped him carry what seemed like the thousandth poster to the gym.
They gave us two free periods to help set up before the game started at five, and I hated how last minute everything was.
We had to make posters, set up for the pep rally, and do literally anything else they ask in under four hours.
Not to mention that it seemed like everyone but me knew this game was going on.
I think they must have forgot to mention it at some point, especially with the fact that it's apparently been announced for two weeks now.
We're just setting up with no prior experience hours beforehand.
A slight chuckle left my mouth at Milo's extremely relatable thought.
"On the verge of saying a poster fell on me or something, because preparing for a game a few hours before it's happening is crazy," I replied, still feeling annoyed at all of this.
I could thrive, just give me a proper time frame to do so.
"Seriously," he agreed setting the final poster paper down on the gym floor so we could do horrible bubble lettering and hang it up with painters tape.
"Cairo?" the familiar voice of the teacher called me.
I walked away from the huge price of paper as I made my way over to her.
"Yes?" I questioned, knowing i was about to get sent on another goose chase for the most random item that we supposedly need for this game.
"I just remembered that we ran out of purple paint to paint the posters with, could you check the storage closet by the freshman side to see if we have more?" she questioned.
Just like I guessed.
"Yes I can," I replied.
I had no idea what a freshman side, even was.
"Could you take Corey with you? She'll help you find it," she added.
Great, this just got ten times more worse.
I slightly nodded with a small smile as I headed out of their gym, and to wherever Corey was.
I remember I saw her and Hayley working on something on the field, she's probably still there.
I haven't actually been to their school prior to this, let alone their games, and when I tell you their football field is massive, i mean just that.
Ours was good too but the differences were really apparent.
I walked across the spacious field, seeing them setting up some kind of booth in the background.
We were all assigned different roles for today along with being put in pairs, with my partner being Milo.
Who was actually really fun to be around.
Upon noticing me approaching, she rose to her usual height, meeting me halfway in my path which gave me a chance to take in her outfit.
And even though it was fairly simple, i couldn't deny the fact that she looked good.
Corey had on a plain black shirt, exposing her toned arms, dark blue baggy jeans, and Jordan black cats on her feet with her usual jewelry.
"The art teacher needed me to get some more paint," I said.
She raised an eyebrow at me mainly due to the fact that I didn't necessarily have to tell her that.
I sucked in a deep breath, "And... she wanted you to come with me, I don't know where to go," I finally added.
She hummed, "Okay." she said dropping the paint brush in her hands in the grass.
"Where are you going?" Hayley asked in confusion.
"I'll be back." she replied flatly before walking in front of me, signaling me to follow her.
We walked through the spacious school in what I felt was an awkward silence before I ultimately decided to break it first.
"You and Hayley are friends?" I asked, mainly because every time they have an interaction it's like unsaid tension in it.
"Not anymore, no." she replied with the most undetailed response ever.
Deciding that I wasn't going to pry anymore I briefly hummed.
We continued in silence walking nearly ten minutes to the other side of the school for paint as random thoughts traveled in and out of my head.
"Im sorry."
I furrowed my brows before stopping dead in my tracks, causing Corey to turn around and face me.
"I–what?" I questioned, not understanding where the random apology came from.
"I'm sorry. For what I said and how I was acting." she repeated herself with the most serious tone I heard from her yet.
And even though I wanted to think it was sincere– because it sounded that way, her actions and words just didn't match up.
Her saying that she didn't trust me was believable, her turning around and saying she was sorry about it just wasn't.
A small smirk grew on my face, "Yeah right Corey–"
"I mean it, you didn't deserve that, it wasn't my intention to hurt you," she continued, cutting off my disbelief.
I furrowed my brows, I don't know why I felt irritated now, "So what exactly were your intentions Corey? Because you being so on and off about everything seems to cloud what your true intentions really are," I shot back.
I watched as she opened her mouth to speak before closing it again, seemingly proving my point.
"I really appreciate what you did at the party, I do, but if you're going to try and help me one day then turn around and shut me down for no reason the next, then I prefer you not trying to save face." I replied.
Even though why I was here wasn't real, nobody knew that, therefore her treating me that way with no solid proof of anything is just showing her true colors.
A silence fell over us as we retained eye contact for what seemed like an eternity.
"Could we get the paint? Were on a time crunch–"
"Let me make it up to you." she finally spoke.
I narrowed my eyes at her, "Make it up to me?" I repeated back like I didn't hear her clearly.
"Yes Cairo, make it up to you" she said, mocking my tone.
But I ultimately shook my head, deciding to be petty and decline her offer just like she declined mine when I asked to hang out with her. "Ill pass, I think we should just leave this how it is." I said quoting when she told me she'll pass.
I really cant get over that.
"Just this one time, if you dont like it then you never have to speak to me again," she offered and I couldnt help but feel weird at the thought of never speaking to her again.
I was upset but not that upset.
I contemplated my answer for a free seconds before finally deciding on my decision, "Fine."
"Cool, lets go," she siad turning on her heel.
"Wait– right now?" I questioned knowing that we needed to get this poster done before game and the clock was only losing time.
She turned back around and nodded, "Yeah, it'll be quick it's just down the street, they wont even notice were gone," she explained, turning back around to walk.
I stood there dumbfounded for a second as she progressively walked away, "Yeah alright." I murmured, catching up with her.
