Until now I thought I'd survived the free fall
I’m holding my breath
Until my lungs riot
Against my ribs,
Until my heart falters
From its throne
In my chest.
There is a darkness
In my veins,
A plague that lingers
In every breath.
Violet petals
Of bruised moons
Beneath my eyelashes,
Sunken snow drifts
carved by the tears
That jump from their prisons.
It’s a free fall -
A glimmer of light
That is reaped from barren trees.
I used to think
I could keep the sunlight
Pressed in the cracks of my smile.
But I’m waiting,
Yes, I’m waiting,
For the moonlight
To carry me home.
