"Jace!" Katie shook him urgently while glancing over her shoulder toward the door leading to the garage.
"Hmm?" He mumbled quietly as he blinked his eyes slowly open.
"We gotta go." Katie stated, grabbing Jace by the wrist and pulling him toward the back door.
"Why?" Jace groaned in complaint as he rose to his feet.
"They're here."
"Who?"
"The house owners!" Katie exclaimed in a whispered yell, glaring at Jace and yanking him toward the door.
"Oh shit!" Jace grabbed his shoes, scrambling toward the back door, now fully awake and aware. Katie grabbed anything of hers she'd left laying around, including Tux, before bolting out the back door. Just as the door slammed shut behind the two, the family who owned the house walked in, missing them by no more than a second.
"Come on!" Katie called over her shoulder as she ran for the forest edge; her usual escape route. Jace rolled his eyes, speeding up as he followed her. Katie glanced over her shoulder, waving for Jace to hurry. As she turned back toward the forest she spotted the police officer a moment to late, slamming into him.
"Crap." Katie whispered as she backed slowly away from the officer. As she was about to run, the officer pulled his gun, pointing it straight at her head.
"Hands up! On your knees!" The officer demanded, holding his gun at the ready, it's aim still trained on Katie's head.
"Ok, alright." Katie raised her hands slowly, knowing better than to challenge someone with a gun. She lowered herself to her knees with her jaw clenched.
Jace jogged up to where she was, the scene registering instantly. The cop glanced at Jace, giving him the same instructions, "Get on your knees with your hands up!"
Jace's eyes widened as he quickly got on his knees and raised his hands. The cop walked toward Katie, grabbing her hands and cuffing them behind her back. Clicking them into place, he moved onto Jace, handcuffing him as well.
"Rick, meet me on the hill," the officer spoke into his radio, "I got the two fugitives we've been chasing."
"Fugitives?" Katie scoffed quietly, "Hardly."
The cop shot her a glare and she raised her eyebrows in mock surrender muttering, "Sorry your highness."
"Your mouth is going to get you in more trouble than you're already in, miss." The cop added with a pointed glare at Katie.
She smirked and Jace elbowed her softly, "Katie, just drop it."
"Why?!" Katie asked in a hissed whisper, "He's irritating and his hair is stupid."
Jace held in a laugh, glancing at the cop's choppy, almost buzz cut hair, it was a little ridiculous. Jace's lips curled inward as he tried not to smile or laugh at Katie's hilariously true yet off handed comment. Katie chuckled quietly, glancing back at the officer's hair with a smirk.
The cop's backup, Rick, jogged up the hill giving Jace and Katie a once over. "These two are supposedly dangerous?" Rick asked with a small laugh, "They can't be more than 18 or 19."
"Um, I'm 21 actually." Jace spoke up, looking slightly pissed at the officer's comment.
"Same." Katie stated with a raised eyebrow, "Well almost."
"Still just mangy college kids." Rick retorted with a quick glare. The cops whispered to each other in hushed tones before turning back to Jace and Katie. They motioned for them to stand and each took one of them forcefully by the bicep. They marched them to the squad car, slamming the door once they were both inside.
