Spotting her friends in the cafeteria, Emily went over to sit down with them.
"You're only having a sandwich?" Nana asks, eyeing the sandwich packet in Emily's hand that she picked up from the convenience store earlier.
"Yeah. I have to swim right after so. But I also have this yogurt," Emily says.
"How did it go?" Jia asks and Emily nods her head and says, "It went well. I think. She said she's going to look into it."
Jia nodded her head in satisfaction and said, "See, I told you its worth a try."
Emily nods her head in agreement.
"What's worth a try?" Soyeon asked, her mouth full of rice.
Emily looks at Jia who gives her a pointed look.
"You promised us to share everything," Jia says, reading into Emily's hesitation to open up.
Emily puts down the sandwich in her head and sighs. "Alright. Alright."
The next ten minutes consisted of Emily reciting the entire tale again to Soyeon and Nana, this time with a little bit more of drama and flair, as well as with Jia's intervention wherever she thought as necessary. Emily has to admit, it is certainly fun to recite stories, especially when you get over the top reactions like what Soyeon and Nana give. Emily can finally see the fun to gossiping. She has never felt so much more important in her life before.
"Oh my god!" Soyeon said, "You know...I've actually been thinking about this for a while, but I think Yejune comes from a rich house."
Emily pondered and then said, "I mean...I know her family is well off but I really don't think she's rich rich."
"See, that's the issue. I searched her name up all over social media and I even asked my mom to dig through some civil cases, and I can't find her name anywhere. I mean I did find her instagram but it didn't have any large amount of followers out of the ordinary and neither did her photos look out of place. So she doesn't seem rich but then why is everyone so goddamn bending all over for her," Soyeon said.
"You stalked her?" Nana asked.
"Of course. You know me," Soyeon scoffed.
Nana just nods her head.
"She's not mega rich or even upper class," Emily says, "She's definitely middle class. I know she's also on a swimming scholarship at Seoul National. It's just, she's a pure Korean unlike me."
"Wow. I didn't expect to see reverse racism here," Jia said.
"Plus, if you look at her track record, its amazing. She's been the number one Korean female swimmer since she's been fifteen. For them, Yejune is a safe bet because they've known her for longer and she's always been stable at competitions. She's never had injuries or health issues and she's consistent," Emily explains.
"Yeah-but you have more international titles than she has," Soyeon said pointedly.
"I do but that was also when were competing at the Junior level. And then I got injured and I haven't been performing as well since," Emily said, "well...not until recently."
Nana frowned at the mention of Emily's injury and said, "You know...I don't think you've actually told us how you got injured before. It must have been serious if it was so career changing."
"Uh-"Emily slowed down her movements, thinking of how to explain when she got cut off.
"Emily/"
The four girls sitting on the table turned around to see Jackson standing a few feet away.
