Emily is a woman on a mission.
With her mind made up with determination, Emily walks up to Coach Shin's office and knocks on the door loudly.
"Come in," She heard Coach Shin say. Emily opened the door to Coach Shin's office and walks inside only to stop after taking two steps.
Coach Shin isn't alone.
No, the director of the National Training Center is sitting on the couch across from her. Coach Shin is seated on the other side of the couch, with a cup of coffee in her hand, and her legs crossed over each other.
"Uh-"
Coach Shin raises an eyebrow at Emily's inability to form a proper sentence and says, "What is it?"
"Oh...um...I wanted to discuss something with you...but as you are occupied right now, I will come back later," Emily said.
"You can say it now," Coach Shin said.
"Oh...no, its okay. It's not urgent anyways," Emily said, feigning a smile, "I'll just come later."
"Perhaps I should leave?" The director suggested, sensing Emily's hesitation.
Emily's eyes widened and she shook her head violently and said, "Oh no. No, no. It's okay. It really is. I'll just come over later. I'm sorry for disturbing you."
Emily bowed a few times quickly, trying to leave by taking a step back but was stopped when Coach Shin said, "Eunmi, are you heading to the the gym?"
"Yes," Emily answered.
"Go to the pool instead," Coach Shin ordered.
Emily paused, her face written with lines of confusion, as she said, "I thought today was strength training."
"It was but I realized you're leaving tomorrow for Sebong. So I want you to get one last swim day before you leave. Then you would be gone for a month and then we would only have one month left to train you for the Asian Games," Coach Shin said.
"Ah...okay," Emily nodded, "Only me?"
"Only you," Coach Shin confirmed.
"Right. Thank you," Emily bowed once more before leaving. She leaned against the door for a few seconds after closing it behind her and let out a deep sigh. She had walked in with so much confidence and resolution within her but as soon as she saw the director sitting inside, her plans went down the drain. Emily is familiar with Coach Shin which why she even felt comfortable enough to come up and argue with her. But Emily barely even known the director and she has never even held a conversation with him. So arguing in front of the director is out of the question.
Now that she has missed her chance, Emily is filled with doubt inside of her.
Is it really worth fighting against an entire system when Emily already knows what the outcome will be. She knows nothing will really change. They will still let Yejune the green light to swim since she has been on the national team for much longer. Besides, Emily has also realized that the training center officials seem to highly favor athletes that come from Korea National University. Especially swimmers.
Have spent one year at the training center, one thing Emily has learnt is that people aren't highly welcoming of her. They still view her as an opportunist American who saw an easy way to swim internationally. And yes, maybe she is an opportunist but at least she is bringing in the medals at the end of the day. Isn't that more important?
Letting out another deep breath, Emily walks away from the office, heading over to her dorm again to pick up her swimsuit since her training program has been changed for the day.
