[24] Rising Concerns

You've always known Aizawa can be a bit strict at times. Even now, you still can't forget the heartless burger ban he imposed upon you. Present Mic is much more easygoing with his parenting style, whereas Aizawa is usually the one to lay down the law.

That being said, he's not unreasonable, so what the hell is going on here?

"What the fuck, dad?" you gape. "Isn't that... a little extreme?"

Aizawa narrows his eyes. "Watch your language. And while we're at school, I'd rather you didn't address me so casually." He then turns to the rest of the class, who is freaking out just as much as you are. "Natural disasters... massive accidents... dangerous villains... anything can happen when we least expect it. Life has always been unpredictable, and it's our job as heroes to restore reason and balance. If you were counting on a friendly, laid-back school experience, then that's too bad. From now on, for the next three years, you can expect your life at U.A. to be filled with one hardship after the next."

There's a pause, and another lazy grin cuts across Aizawa's lips.

"Plus Ultra. That's our school's motto. If you're serious about becoming heroes, then I expect you to overcome all these trials and climb to the top."

The class begins to settle down. They're starting to realize that Aizawa means business, and for better or worse, he's the one who gets to call the shots.

So, then, someone's actually going to get expelled? On the very first day of school?

And that person... might even be you?

"Haha... ha." You chuckle weakly, sparing Izuku a quick glance. "Wouldn't it be funny if I got expelled by my own dad? That would... really be something, huh?"

Izuku looks like he's resisting the urge to cry, and honestly-same.

The trials begin. You start with the 50-meter dash, which is pretty straightforward, but unfortunately, your Quirk can't really help you out here. You've always had better speed, strength, and stamina than the average person, but your results can't even compare to people whose powers give them a massive boost, like Iida, for instance, with his high-mobility engine Quirk.

You obtain a slightly better time than you had in middle school, but again, it's really nothing to write home about. The boy who was running the 50-meter dash next to you finished faster, having created a layer of ice to slide across.

"That was neat," you beam. "That ice power seems really useful. I bet there's a bunch of different ways you can use it-"

He walks away before you can finish your sentence. In fact, he barely even bothered to acknowledge your presence. You may as well have been a fly buzzing around him.

Not everyone's friendly, I guess.

You shrug, unbothered. Maybe he's preoccupied with completing all the trials and getting a good score. Sure, it wouldn't have killed him to spare you a word or two, but Aizawa made it clear that all of you are competing with each other, and you can't afford to let your guards down. You're not going to take it personally.

He has beautiful eyes, though. Other than the discernible scar on his face, they're the very first thing you noticed about him. Heterochromia, you're pretty sure that condition is called. Two differently-colored eyes, each of which sparkles like a jewel.

But he looked a bit angry for some reason. Or sad. Or perhaps a combination of both.

Then again, maybe you're just reading into things too much.

You move onto the grip strength test next, and once again, you are faced with the haunting realization that your Quirk won't be useful for any of these trials. All things considered, you know that your base Quirk is incredibly strong. Being able to heal yourself after suffering extreme injuries is not only very handy for a hero who'll likely face all kinds of danger, but it's also just a powerful ability for pretty much anyone to have.
