The next morning, I dragged myself out of bed, feeling more exhausted than when I had gone to sleep. School seemed like a daunting task, especially with the knowledge of what had transpired the night before hanging over me. I had to face Damien again, and I had no idea how I was supposed to act around him.

As I walked through the hallways of Crescent High, I tried to avoid any contact with Damien . I kept my head down, focusing on getting to my locker and then to class without incident. But it was impossible to ignore the pull I felt, the magnetic force that drew my eyes to him every chance I got.

I spotted him in the hallway, surrounded by his usual group of Moonshine pack members. He looked just as composed and confident as ever, but there was a tension in his posture that hadn't been there before. Was he feeling the same turmoil I was? Did he also spend a sleepless night trying to come to terms with this new reality?

"Xavier, you okay?" Mia's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. She had an uncanny ability to sense when something was bothering me.

"Yeah, just tired," I replied, trying to sound casual. "Didn't sleep well last night."

She gave me a sympathetic look. "Is it because of the ceremony? Finding out about your mate?"

I nodded, not trusting myself to say more. I couldn't tell her the whole truth, not yet.

As we made our way to class, I couldn't help but glance back at Damien . Our eyes met for a brief moment, and I saw a flicker of something—confusion, maybe even concern. It was gone as quickly as it had appeared, but it left me wondering what he was thinking, how he was feeling about this whole situation.

The rest of the day was a blur of classes and awkward encounters. I did my best to avoid Damien , but it was impossible to ignore the bond between us. Every time he was near, my heart would race, and my wolf would stir, reminding me of the connection we shared.

During lunch, I found myself at a table with Alex and the rest of our pack. The conversation was light, but my mind was elsewhere, constantly drifting back to Damien . I couldn't shake the feeling that he was watching me too, even though I avoided looking in his direction.

"Xavier, you seem really distracted today," Alex said, frowning. "Is something going on?"

I forced a smile, trying to keep my voice steady. "Just thinking about the ceremony and who my mate might be."

Alex's expression softened. "I get it. It's a big deal. But whoever it is, we'll support you."

His words were meant to be comforting, but they only added to my anxiety. How would Alex react if he knew the truth? That my mate was Damien , the person he hated more than anyone else? I couldn't bear the thought of disappointing him, of creating more tension between our packs.

As the day wore on, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate. My mind kept wandering back to Damien , to the bond we shared and the uncertainty of what it all meant. I wanted to talk to him, to understand how he was feeling, but I didn't know how to approach him without drawing attention.

After school, I lingered by my locker, hoping to catch a glimpse of him without anyone noticing. When I finally saw him, he was alone, leaning against the wall with a thoughtful expression on his face. It was now or never.

I took a deep breath and approached him, my heart pounding in my chest. "Damien , can we talk?"

He looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Yeah, sure. Let's go somewhere private."

We made our way to a secluded spot behind the school, away from prying eyes and ears. The silence between us was heavy, filled with unspoken questions and uncertainty.

"I don't even know where to start," I admitted, running a hand through my hair in frustration. "This whole situation is... insane."

"I know," Damien said, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "I didn't expect this either."

"How are we supposed to do that?" I asked, feeling a mix of frustration and desperation. "Our packs hate each other. Alex hates you. And now we're supposed to be mates?"

Damien expression hardened, a coldness settling into his eyes. "Xavier, this isn't going to work."

His words hit me like a physical blow. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," he said, his tone icy, "we need to stay away from each other. This bond might be real, but it's not practical. Our packs would never accept it, and frankly, I don't want to deal with the fallout. So let's just keep our distance and pretendthis never happened."

I felt a sharp pain in my chest, like my heart was being torn in two. "Damien , you can't just ignore this. We have to find a way to make it work."

"No," he replied, his voice unwavering. "We don't. Stay away from me, Xavier. Don't talk to me at school unless it's absolutely necessary. Let's keep this professional."

I stood there, stunned, as he walked away without another word. The cold rejection left me feeling hollow and alone, the weight of our bond pressing down on me like a crushing burden. I had hoped that Damien would be willing to at least try to figure things out, but his dismissal had shattered that hope.

As I watched him disappear into the distance, a sense of despair settled over me. I was left with more questions than answers, and the realization that I was truly alone in this struggle. The bond between us might be real, but it was clear that Damien had no intention of acknowledging it.

I turned and walked back to my car, the pain in my chest growing with each step. The drive home was a blur, my mind racing with thoughts of what had just happened. How was I supposed to navigate this new reality when the person I was bound to wanted nothing to do with me?

That night, as I lay in bed, the weight of Damien's rejection pressed down on me, suffocating and relentless. The bond between us was a constant reminder of what could have been, but his cold dismissal had turned it into a source of pain and confusion.

I didn't know what to do. I didn't know how to move forward. All I knew was that I was trapped between duty and desire, and the path ahead seemed more uncertain than ever.
