Damien's PoV
Rejecting Xavier was one of the hardest things I'd ever done. As I walked away from him, I could feel the pain radiating from the bond we shared, a sharp contrast to the cold façade I was desperately trying to maintain. The weight of the situation bore down on me, and I felt like I was suffocating under its pressure.
I slipped into the woods behind the school, needing a moment to collect myself. The trees closed in around me, their familiar scent offering a semblance of comfort. My mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. On one hand, the bond I felt with Xavier was undeniable—every fiber of my being screamed to embrace it, to embrace him. But on the other hand, our packs were in a precarious balance, and the rivalry that had defined our lives for so long couldn't just be ignored.
"Damien !" I heard my best friend, Connor, call out from a distance. I took a deep breath and composed myself before stepping out from the trees.
"Hey, Connor," I said, trying to sound normal.
"There you are! I've been looking for you. We've got practice in five minutes," he said, clapping me on the shoulder.
"Right, practice," I muttered, falling into step beside him. The distraction was welcome, but I couldn't shake the feeling of Xavier's hurt and confusion. It echoed through the bond, making it hard to focus on anything else.
The practice session was a blur. I went through the motions, my mind miles away. I couldn't stop thinking about Xavier, about the way his eyes had looked when I told him to stay away. It was like watching a mirror shatter, each piece reflecting a fragment of his pain. I hated myself for doing that to him, but I couldn't see any other way. Our packs would never accept us, and the fallout would be catastrophic.
After practice, I made my way home, trying to keep my emotions in check. My father, Alpha Lucas, was waiting for me in the living room, a stern look on his face.
"Damien , we need to talk," he said, motioning for me to sit down.
I complied, my heart sinking. "What's up, Dad?"
"I heard about the ceremony last night," he began, his tone serious. "I know you found your mate."
The blood drained from my face. "How did you...?"
"Word gets around fast in this pack," he replied, leaning forward. "So, who is it?"
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. If I told him the truth, it could spell disaster for both our packs. "It's... complicated."
His eyes narrowed. "Complicated how?"
"Just... complicated. I'm still figuring things out," I said, trying to buy myself some time.
He studied me for a long moment before nodding. "I trust you'll handle it. But remember, Damien , your duty to this pack comes first. Always."
"Of course, Dad," I said, the weight of his words settling heavily on my shoulders.
I retreated to my room, the walls closing in around me. The bond with Xavier pulsed in the back of my mind, a constant reminder of what I'd just turned my back on. I lay down on my bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling more trapped than ever.

The next morning, I went through my usual routine, trying to ignore the gnawing emptiness inside me. As I walked into Crescent High, the familiar sights and sounds offered little comfort. Everywhere I looked, I saw reminders of Xavier, of what we could never have.
