As the days passed, Marcus and I became a more cohesive team. Despite the initial hesitance and distrust from Damien's pack members towards Marcus, they had grown accustomed to him. Surprisingly, we were able to run the pack smoothly, thanks to Damien's detailed instructions. It was almost as if he anticipated every possible scenario and prepared for it meticulously.

Marcus's POV
The fact that Damien entrusted us with the task of leading his pack while he was gone must mean he was starting to trust me, at least to a certain extent. Everyone here loved Xavier; who wouldn't? He was the most kind-hearted and endearing person I knew. As the first week came to an end, I kept reminding myself that Damien would be back in three days. Originally, he was supposed to be gone for two weeks, but the meeting ended earlier than expected.
Today was Sunday, a day of rest for most pack members. Xavier and I decided to take advantage of the downtime and headed to the lake. Just as we were about to reach the water, we heard people shouting and screaming. We turned back immediately, only to be met by one of the main guards running towards us, shouting that we were under attack.
"Rogues! We're being attacked!" the guard yelled, his eyes wide with fear and urgency.
Xavier and I exchanged a panicked glance. We weren't prepared for this kind of situation. The guard looked to us for permission to take charge, recognizing our lack of experience in handling such crises.
"Go! Take charge!" I ordered, my voice steadier than I felt.
The guard nodded and ran off, shouting orders to mobilize the defenses. My instincts kicked in, and I turned to Xavier. "Go to the house. Make sure the children and women are safe. Keep them calm."
At first, Xavier was reluctant, but he understood the necessity of his role. "Be careful, Marcus," he said, his voice laced with concern.
"I will," I assured him, watching him sprint towards the house.
Even though I wasn't as experienced as an alpha in handling these situations, I was still a skilled fighter. I joined the other fighters who weren't yet engaged in battle in front of Damien's house. They were discussing strategy, trying to get a sense of the attackers.
"Who's attacking us?" I asked, scanning the anxious faces around me.
"We've never seen anything like this before," one of the fighters replied. "It's rogues, but there's a huge pack of them."
After a brief but intense discussion, we dispersed to support those already fighting. I took one last look at the house where Xavier was and then ran towards the front lines, my heart pounding with adrenaline.

Xavier's POV
Internally, I was panicking. I didn't know what was going on, but I tried my best to appear calm and collected on the outside. I gathered all the children and women in the safe room below the house. Suddenly, a woman cried out that her child was missing.
"Stay calm," I told her, forcing my voice to remain steady. "I'll find your child. Lock the door behind me until I come back and give the signal."
As I stepped out of the safe room, my anxiety spiked. I heard a child crying and found the little boy hiding behind the sofa in the living room. I scooped him up and knocked on the safe room door. The child ran to his mother as soon as the door opened.
Just as I was about to step inside, a hand grabbed me roughly from behind. I shouted for them to lock the door, and I heard the lock click just as I was pulled away. I turned to face my attacker, a man with a menacing look in his eyes, flanked by two other men.
I tried to run, but they caught up to me as soon as I stepped out of the building. One of them hit me over the head, and as my world started to go dark, the last thing I saw was a figure running towards me. It looked like Damien. I wished it was true.

Marcus's POV
The fight was brutal. The rogues were relentless, and we were struggling to hold our ground. Despite the chaos, my thoughts kept drifting back to Xavier. I hoped he was safe. I had to trust that he was.
Just then, I heard a commotion near the house. I turned and saw a group of rogues dragging someone out. My heart stopped when I recognized Xavier. He was unconscious, and the rogues were dragging him away.
"Xavier!" I shouted, my voice raw with fear and anger.
I fought my way towards him, but the rogues were too many. Just as I was about to reach him, a powerful force knocked me off my feet. I looked up and saw Damien standing there, his eyes blazing with fury. He fought like a man possessed, tearing through the rogues with a ferocity I had never seen before.
"Get Xavier to safety!" Damien roared at me, his voice filled with authority.
I didn't need to be told twice. I scooped up Xavier's limp form and ran towards the house. The remaining fighters were rallying around Damien, and the tide of the battle was starting to turn in our favor.
Once inside the house, I laid Xavier down on a couch and checked for injuries. His head was bleeding, but it didn't seem too serious. I cleaned the wound and bandaged it as best I could, my hands shaking with relief.
