Damien's POV
As Marcus tripped, my reflexes kicked in, and I reached out to grab him, pulling him back towards me. The unexpected result was him landing squarely on my lap. The initial shock quickly subsided, but what lingered was the undeniable warmth of his body pressing against my groin. I found myself unable to look away from him. Minutes passed, and I noticed Marcus glancing at my lips briefly. That slight action caused me to part my lips slightly, letting out a breath. I saw Marcus react to it.
Another minute or so passed before Marcus flustered, got up, mumbled something about needing to put his dishes away, and left the room. I was left in the kitchen, sitting by myself, replaying what had just happened. Why did Marcus affect me like this? I didn't want to be this weak, but I couldn't stop these feelings from growing stronger whenever he was close. This wasn't just about my pack anymore; it was about something deeper, something I couldn't fully comprehend.
I decided to take a walk, knowing I wouldn't be able to concentrate on work. My thoughts were a mess, and my legs carried me unconsciously to the lake. When I arrived, I stumbled upon a scene I didn't expect. Marcus was there, lying in the grass, his sweat glistening in the sun. He seemed to be asleep, but as I got closer, I noticed him mumbling and shifting. Suddenly, he moaned, and I felt a strange compulsion to get closer.
I crouched down, watching as Marcus began to touch himself unconsciously, his shirt riding up to reveal his toned abs. My hand reached out instinctively, wanting to trace the lines of his muscles. He started to shift again, and I quickly stood up, ready to leave, but then I heard him moan my name in his sleep. That sound sent a shiver down my spine, and I knew I had to figure out what was going on between us.
There were too many things happening at once. I had to worry about my pack, train them better, and prepare for the worst with my informants returning the next day. Xavier and I had barely spent any time together, and now I had this thing with Marcus to figure out as well.
---
The next morning, I was jolted awake by a loud bang on my door. One of my top guards burst in, informing me that my four informants had returned in terrible shape. I quickly dressed and sprinted downstairs to the common house, where the pack nurses were already tending to them. Three of them were in critical condition, and one was unconscious. The one who was semi-conscious was mumbling incoherently.
I asked the nurses when I could talk to them, and they said the conscious one might be able to speak within the next half hour, but it was unclear when the others would be coherent. As I paced around the room, my mind raced with possibilities. Why were they in such bad shape?
I had sent two of them to the Prophets to find out why they hadn't informed us about the rogue pack. The other two were supposed to trace the scent of the rogues and find any clues about their hiding spots. After 40 minutes, one of my members started speaking clearly, mentioning an ambush on the way back. Somehow, the rogues knew their route, which was supposed to be top-secret.
How could this happen? Our routes and information were kept strictly confidential. I shouted at the unconscious informant, demanding answers, but the nurses told me to stop. They insisted I let him rest if I wanted more information.
Frustrated, I stormed out of the house and ran to the lake. I needed to blow off some steam, so I decided to swim. The cool water helped calm my nerves and clear my head. I stayed by the lake for hours, swimming and lying in the grass, trying to make sense of everything.
---
As the sun began to set, I decided it was time to head back. I couldn't avoid my responsibilities forever. I needed to check on the informants again. As I approached the common house, I saw Xavier and Marcus talking quietly outside. Their faces were serious, and I could tell they were worried.
"Any updates?" I asked as I joined them.
"Not yet," Xavier replied, his eyes full of concern. "But the nurses said the conscious one might be able to speak again soon."
I nodded, appreciating their support. "Let's go inside."
We entered the common house, and I immediately went to the informant who had spoken earlier. He looked slightly better, though still weak. I crouched down next to him, trying to keep my voice calm. "Can you tell me more about the ambush?"
He nodded weakly. "We were... coming back... they knew... our route... ambushed us... couldn't... fight them off..."
"How did they know our route?" I pressed, frustration bubbling up.
"Someone... must have... told them..." he whispered before falling unconscious again.
My blood ran cold at the implication. There was a traitor among us. Someone had betrayed us. I stood up, my fists clenched, trying to control my anger. Xavier and Marcus looked at me, their faces reflecting my own shock and anger.
"We need to find out who did this," I said, my voice steely. "We can't let this happen again."
---
The next few days were a blur of interrogations and investigations. We questioned everyone who had access to the informants' routes, but no one admitted to knowing anything. The tension in the pack was palpable, everyone on edge, knowing there was a traitor within our group.
One evening, after another exhausting day of investigations, I found Marcus by the lake again. He was sitting on the grass, staring out at the water. I approached him quietly, sitting down beside him.
"Hey," I said softly.
He looked over at me, a small smile on his lips. "Hey."
We sat in silence for a while, the only sound the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of peace being near him, despite everything that was happening.
"I'm sorry about earlier," I said finally. "I shouldn't have shouted at the informant like that."
Marcus shook his head. "You're under a lot of pressure, Damien. It's understandable."
"I just... I don't know who to trust anymore," I admitted, my voice cracking slightly.
"You can trust me," Marcus said firmly. "I'm here for you, for Xavier, for the pack."
His words warmed something inside me, and I found myself leaning in slightly, our shoulders brushing. "Thank you, Marcus."
