The words echoed in my mind, a relentless, painful mantra: "I reject you as my mate." Damiens voice had been steady, unyielding, and final. As he walked away, I felt as if a part of me had been ripped out, leaving a gaping, bleeding wound.

I stood there in the secluded spot behind the school, trying to process what had just happened. My legs felt like jelly, and I had to lean against a tree to keep from collapsing. The bond that had been so powerful and undeniable was now a source of excruciating pain. How could he do this to me? How could he just walk away and reject me like I was nothing?

Eventually, I forced myself to move, to make my way back to my car. The drive home was a blur of tears and heartache, the world outside my window reduced to a meaningless backdrop to my internal turmoil. When I finally got home, I headed straight to my room, locking the door behind me. I couldn't face anyone right now. I needed to be alone, to try and come to terms with the unbearable weight of Damiens rejection.

For two days, I stayed locked in my room, my only company the haunting silence and my own tortured thoughts. I barely ate, barely slept. I couldn't stop replaying the scene in my mind, the way Damiems eyes had been so cold, so final. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his face, heard his voice rejecting me again and again.

Mia and Alex tried to check on me, knocking on my door, calling my phone, but I ignored them all. I couldn't bear to talk to anyone, to explain the pain I was feeling. How could I tell Alex that the person he hated most in the world had rejected me as his mate? How could I admit to anyone that I was heartbroken over someone from the rival pack?

On the third day, something inside me snapped. The sorrow and heartbreak were still there, but they began to harden into something else—something colder and more resolute. I couldn't go on like this, letting Damien's rejection destroy me. If he could be so cold and unfeeling, then so could I.

I forced myself to get out of bed, to shower and dress. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I barely recognized the person staring back. The lightheartedness, the warmth that had once defined me, were gone, replaced by a steely determination. I wouldn't let Damien's rejection break me. I would become stronger, colder. I would bury the pain deep inside and never let anyone see it.

When I walked into Crescent High that morning, I could feel the change in the air. People looked at me differently, sensing the shift in my demeanor. My usual smile was replaced with a hardened expression, my eyes cold and distant. I moved through the hallways with a new sense of purpose, determined not to let anyone see the hurt that still festered inside me.

"Xavier, where have you been?" Mia asked, hurrying to catch up with me.

"I needed some time," I replied curtly, not meeting her eyes.

"You've been gone for two days. We were worried about you," she said, her concern palpable.

"I'm fine," I said, my tone leaving no room for further questions.

She looked taken aback by my brusqueness, but she didn't press the issue. I continued to my locker, ignoring the curious glances and whispered conversations that followed me. I couldn't afford to let anyone see the cracks in my façade. I had to be strong, to protect myself from further pain.

As I made my way to my first class, I saw Damien at the end of the hallway. Our eyes met briefly, and I saw a flicker of something—regret, perhaps?—in his gaze. But I quickly looked away, refusing to let myself feel anything. He had made his choice, and I had to live with it.

The rest of the day was a blur of classes and interactions that felt hollow and meaningless. I went through the motions, my mind numb to everything around me. My friends noticed the change, their concern growing with each passing hour, but I kept them at arm's length. I couldn't let anyone in, couldn't let them see the pain that still gnawed at my insides.
