You slipped on a mask before walking into the classroom, trying to ignore the dull ache behind your eyes. Your little sister had gotten sick over the weekend, and after tending to her, she seemed to pass the virus on to you, as well.
But being sick sometimes felt like a luxury. There were chores and duties and responsibilities. It didn't feel like you were allowed to slow down for anything. Not with your parents leaving home early in the morning to work long hospital shifts.
So convincing yourself that this was just a bout of allergies, you slid into your desk and began organizing your notes.
Friends came up to your desk to ask how your weekend was or what sort of fun activities you had planned for the week. But as you began to update them, your throat took on that sore, scratchy feeling. Quietly, you excused yourself to go warm up some tea in the student lounge. At this point, your headache had graduated from an ache to a sharp throb. Your lips were chapped, and your tongue felt like sandpaper in your mouth from how dehydrated you were.
There was one other person in the lounge with you, your friend Suga. He was someone you'd gotten to know throughout high school until you'd become friends.
"Just here for my morning tea!" you chirped, still trying to disguise the fact you felt unwell.
"Y/N, are you okay?" Suga asked, stepping towards you, and you held out a hand, trying to keep your distance. The last thing you wanted was to get anyone else sick.
"I'm totally fine. I'll see you in class," you said before plopping a ginger tea bag into your canteen of hot water.
The spicy drink burned your mouth but warmed your throat. It made the pain manageable. Suga sat close by towards the back of the class, and even though you'd told him you were fine, he couldn't seem to keep his eyes off you.
You relentlessly faced the day, powered by multiple cups of ginger tea and willpower. As soon as classes ended, you packed up your books quickly knowing you had to go home and knock out some chores before your parents came home.
A firm hand grabbed your wrist, and you looked up to see Suga staring at you, worry in his eyes. Instead of talking to you, he wordlessly placed his free hand on your forehead, instantly yanking it away.
"Y/N, you're burning up!"
Suga's voice was so loud, the other students and your teacher turned to look at you. Your teacher quickly made her way over, checking your temperature herself.
"Dear, you've got a nasty fever. If you're ever feeling this unwell, you don't need to force yourself to come to school," she spoke softly.
The concern in Suga's eyes and the worry in your teacher's voice pushed you over the edge, and you began to cry. Suga squeezed your hand, and your teacher sat you down, taking her own seat beside you to help you calm down.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to overreact like that," you blubbered, feeling snotty and feverish. "It's just... a long time before someone has stopped to notice and care. I've been feeling a little overwhelmed at home."
Your teacher nodded with understanding. "I know what you mean. Let me make some phone calls to your parents so they can arrange to pick up your little sister from daycare. That's one of your usual responsibilities, right?"
Your eyes went wide with shock. "How'd you know?"
Your teacher winked. "We're more aware of conversations in the classroom than you think. And we pick up on a lot." She turned her gaze towards Suga and gave him a knowing look.
