Emily's POV

"Hey, sweetheart, we're home again."
I call and lock the front door behind us.

Silence.

Then we hear footsteps and Y/N comes towards us from the hallway.
She smiles at us and my heart skips a beat when I see her.
She's wearing jeans and a simple long-sleeved shirt, her hair falls curly over her shoulders and she's wearing make-up.

She looks pretty, very pretty.

But her eyes don't sparkle like they usually do and a sad shadow seems to hang over her face, even when she smiles.
Something about her gaze, the way she looks at us but doesn't really meet our eyes, tells me that something is wrong.

"Hello you two. It's nice to have you back." She says almost shyly and stops in front of us, shifts her weight from one foot to the other and nervously strokes her upper arm with one hand.
JJ drops her bag and wraps her arms around Y/N's neck.
Y/N stiffens for a fraction of a second, then she returns the hug and I see her expression change as she lies in JJ's arms.
She closes her eyes and for a moment I see her upper lip trembling.

As if she were about to start crying.

But as quickly as the moment came, it is over, the two of them separate and Y/N puts on her smile again, which is a little too wide and doesn't reach her eyes.

I briefly frown worriedly, but say nothing. Instead, I hug Y/N too.
I hug her tightly, gently stroke her back and breathe in her scent.

I missed her.

"How are you, Sweetheart?"
I ask as I lean back and hold her arms to look at her.
She avoids my gaze, blushes and for a moment I see the trembling again.
But she bites her lip and then says in a deliberately relaxed manner.
"I'm fine and you two? Is the case solved?"
Without really looking at me, she breaks away from my touch and walks towards the kitchen, and I notice that she is limping slightly.

I look after her a little perplexed and feel offended.

Something is wrong.
It seems as if a thick wall has been built between us while we were away.

"Yes, the case is solved."
JJ answers but doesn't follow Y/N without first giving me a meaningful look.

She seems to sense it too.

Y/N takes a large salad bowl out of the fridge, her hands are shaking slightly, but she tries to hide it.
She places the bowl on the dining table, pauses for a moment and holds on to the back of a chair.
Then she straightens up and acts as if nothing had happened.
"I hope you're hungry, I cooked for you."
She says happily and points to the set table before turning back to us.

She has her arms crossed in front of her body as if she has to hold herself up and the smile seems forced and out of place.
"

Food sounds wonderful, thank you, Honey." JJ says, takes a few steps towards Y/N, places a hand on her waist and gives her a kiss on the forehead.
Y/N's lips leave an almost silent whimper that she immediately drowns out with a cough.
JJ pauses and looks at her a little more intensely now.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
she asks and takes Y/N's hand.
"Nothing, what are you talking about?"
she asks and a little panic spreads in her voice as she avoids our gaze.
After a few steps I stand directly in front of Y/N and look at her.
I put a hand on her chin and gently raise her gaze so that she looks at me.
"Y/N, it's us. You can talk to us."
She lowers her gaze and the trembling of her upper lip is now clearly visible.
