Richard's POV
Her right leg hooks over my thighs as she snuggles further into my sides, causing a low chuckle to escape my lips.
Satisfied with this moment, I wrap an arm around her, pulling her further in, until she starts to murmur in her sleep.
I almost laugh again.
This is a side of Arabel I have never seen.
When we were married, we barely slept together in the same room, and I really find this adorable.
Perhaps it's because she was drunk last night.
Suddenly, her eyes flicker open, and she shoots to her feet, stalking to the door without looking at me.
“Hey,” I call to her without getting out of bed. “Nothing happened.”
Just like the other day at the penthouse, when she got drunk and slept over in my apartment, she was so worried and flushed that something must have happened between us.
I'm sure she is thinking the same thing now.
My statement makes her stop. I stare at her stiff back until she turns around to meet my gaze.
“I'm not leaving because of that,” she says, making me raise a brow and step down from the bed. “You think I am still drunk and can't remember what happened last night at the club?”
I sigh. I should have known this would happen.
“I'm sorry….”
“You are sorry?” She cuts me short. "Not only are you believing her claims that you two are married, but now you're meeting up with her in a club. A f**kng club, Richard. Apparently, I am no longer needed, so I should go.” She turns around to leave, but I am quick to rise from the bed to grab her back roughly, making her whirl around and slamming her body into mine.
“I. Don't. Believe. Her.” I mutter with gritted teeth.
She thinks I believe Eve because I still haven't received my memory.
“Oh, really? Yet you met with her? At a club? What sort of explanation do you want to give? You know what? There is absolutely no need to lie through your teeth because I was there and saw it all. You even allowed her to hug you. If Eve is the woman you want, f**king stick to her and f**king let me go!” She snaps, anger written all over her.
Instead of explaining myself, a smile touches the corner of my lips, making her raise a brow.
“Sorry,” I mutter. “You look f*cking sexy with those curse words rolling out of your mouth. I've never heard you curse that way.”
She tries to yank herself free, but I hold her more firmly.
“Listen, I didn't go there because I wanted to see Eve. I told you I was going to find out if the certificate was genuine, didn't I? That was why I went there. But I couldn't even do anything to get the words out of her because you suddenly appeared and slept off in my arms. I had to come back home.” My explanation doesn't do a thing to abate her rage.
“So I am to blame, right? You really want me to believe this sh*t?”
I nod gingerly. “Yes. You are the woman I have loved and will always love."
My announcement makes her eyes go wide, and I see her lips trembling before she asks, her eyes searching my face.
“Do you remember now?” There is hope flashing across her expression, but when I shake my head, it is replaced by disappointment.
Slowly, I drag my shirt up, my eyes not leaving hers. She suddenly looks nervous at my actions.
With my shirt off, I touch the spot where I had her name engraved on my skin. “This says it all, babe.”
I don't give her time to process what I say before dragging her closer to me and kissing her lips. “This shows how much you mean to me. I wouldn't engrave the name of a woman I don't love on my skin, would I?”
My eyes are boring into mine, as she remains silent and stiff. It makes me wonder what must be going through her head.
After a moment, when she isn't saying a thing, I step away and sigh. With folded arms, I decide to tell her everything. "Leo and I discovered that the marriage was indeed genuine, but it wasn't between Eve and me. I was hospitalized, and I don't recall going to the registry with anyone else, except for you. Apparently, Eve has some tricks up her sleeves, and we found out I was impersonated.”
My eyes grow open. “What?!”
“Yes,” I say, thinking of telling her who is impersonating me and how she would take it.
Would she believe me if I tell her that Alex and Eve are conspiring to separate us so he can have her, and Eve can be with me instead?
“Oh, my God!” She exclaims, rushing back to the bed. “Ashley said it. Gosh, that girl is a brainiac.”
Laughter erupts from her lips as she grabs her phone. I am sure she wants to call Ashley to tell her she was right. She must have told Ashley what happened, and Ashley thought only impersonation could make the certificate authentic.
Why the hell didn't I think of that before now?
I am quick to stop Arabel from dialing Ashley's number, and she looks up with confusion. “What…”
“You don't want to know who is impersonating me?”
Her expression is filled with worry as she drops the phone, closes her eyes, and then flicks it open to see me still squatting in front of her.
“Even if I don't remember anything, this and everything else Eve has been doing is enough reason to let me know she is the bad one and not you, and you are the one I am in love with…”
“You can't be so sure, Richard.” She cuts me short, letting out a joyless smile. “You left me for her.”
A skitter of panic washes over my skin at her words. Then my heart slams against my ribcage.
She is still hurt.
“Is that why you want me to recover my memory before anything?” I inquire with curiosity, and she immediately nods.
“Yes.”
“You think I might change my mind when I recover my memory or whatever?”
“Yes.” Her answer is confident.
“But I do love you. The time to be confused about who I want to be with is even now that I don't remember anything. When I get back all my memories, nothing is going to change how my heart beats for you. Why don't you believe me?” My words explode with frustration.
I have my memories already. But she keeps insisting that I might change my mind about loving her when all I have ever wanted is her.
She tears her gaze away from me before asking. “You mentioned someone impersonating you to marry Eve? Does that mean the person was there using your name?”
I nod.
“It wasn't you who married her?” I nod again, this time with a light smile on my face.
Relief washes over her, and she remains silent again.
“Aren't you going to ask who it was?” I question, watching her narrow her eyes back to me.
Her eyes soften, the curiosity behind them taking over her expression as she asks. “Who? Is he someone we know?”
“Alex,” I suddenly announce, waiting for the impact of the blow.
Her eyes remain on mine as she slowly processes what I just said. Blinking away the tears in her eyes, she shakes her head and asks. “Which Alex?”
“Alex Will, your one-time friend. He is working with Eve now to make sure we are pulled further apart. He wants Eve to have me so he can finally be with you. He is married to Eve in my name. Those two have no idea the impact of what they have done. They think I am the one married to her since my name is written on the certificate. What they don't know is that the silly paper binds them together, not me and Eve.”
Goosebumps pepper her skin as she begins to convulse, shaking her head in denial. “No, no, no!”
I grab her, wrapping my hands around her shoulder, but she pushes me away and shouts while holding onto her head. “No!”****
