The sky was heavy and grey, clouds shielding the sun from view although it was still midday. Droplets of rain began to fall, tentative and gentle at first but gradually grew heavy and rapid as the storm started to brew.
"Yes, mum. Yeah I've been doing well here, you don't have to worry so much about me." Jiyun spoke into her phone, a touched smile on her face at her parents' concerned nagging.
"Hey is that the sound of thunder? Oh my gosh it must be monsoon season there! Remember to bring an umbrella whenever you go out." Her mother warned while the girl simply hummed in acknowledgement. It wasn't often that Jiyun got to talk to her parents ever since she had reached Korea, due to the fact that their time zones were complete opposites and also because Jiyun couldn't find a good time to call them.
It felt nice to talk to them again, they were the people who had raised her after all. "I miss you guys." She said sincerely, feeling the warmth of their parental love envelop her.
"Aw we miss you too dear."
"I hope you guys are doing fine without me, I'm really happy that I'm here right now. Don't worry about me alright, I can take care of myself."Jiyun could sense her mother relaxing through the phone. "Oh yeah by the way, you know how we shifted to Canada right? The new owner of our house in Korea has been pestering me about some things that we left behind there. I think we left it behind because I forgot that I hid those things," there was a pause, the only sound was ruffling from her mother, "it's just some photo albums of you when you were still a kid and some other stuff, I don't want to throw it away so...can you do me a favour and help me collect the things? I don't think it's a lot based on the photo they sent me."
"Sure, send me the address and I'll go get it."
"Thanks sweetie, you're the best."There was a knock on Jiyun's door that made her stand up, already knowing who it was. "Okay mum I gotta go, my friends and I are going to hang out. I love you, goodnight!" She hung up before rushing to open the door to her room as their incessant knocks got more aggressive.
Haerin and Chaewon immediately charged inside to lay down on the bean bag Jiyun had bought. "Move you fatty, you're taking up three quarters of the space!" Haerin protested, exasperated. Chaewon retaliated by kicking the latter fully off the bean bag instead of giving her more space. Sticking her tongue out, she laughed at Haerin who was now glaring at her with lasers shooting out of her eyes.
"God give me a break, you two are so childish. Not even a 'thank you for opening the door' or a 'hello Jiyun' to acknowledge my godly presence that you've been blessed with." Jiyun clicked her tongue and shook her head in disapproval. "I'm going to charge an entry fee into my dorm next time."
