=)

I glance at the keychain for a few more moments before looking up at Jynx.

"Um...sooooo we... better get going yeah?" I ask, looking at their bewildered face, which is probably due to understandable confusion at why I'm so excited over a literal keychain.

"Yeah...sounds good,"

We start to walk out of the lab and eventually make our way outside into Hotland. Jynx seems kind of...quiet...

Eventually, I try to break the silence.

"It's waaaay too hot here," I comment, smirking slightly.

"Well it is Hotland I'm not entirely sure what you expected," their voice remarks, with traces of sarcasm but they still seem...kind of far away.

Maybe I should actually ask if they're ok...

"Um...Jynx...are you ok?"

Jynx hesitates before shaking their head slightly.

"...Is it because you're missing the surface?" I ask quietly, making an effort to sound sympathetic.

I don't think that's it but...I've got to cover all bases.

"I do a bit but...that isn't it...it's...falling down that cave... I can't get myself to calm down..." they pause before continuing, "it's honestly the most scared I've ever felt," they admit.

"...I thought it was something like that...but hey you're safe, I promised didn't I?" I say with an encouraging tone, "besides we're going somewhere actually safe in this death trap," I turn and their expression calms slightly.

"...I know...I...just wish my soul would listen,"

I'm confused by that statement for a moment. I've been soulless for annoying dog knows how long so I don't really know what having a soul even feels like anymore...

Wait.

...is it because... their soul is still reacting towards being scared and that's what's making Jynx feel this...terrible. I've heard souls have a tendency to do that... well more like I read it from some of Alphys lab files when I got bored.

"heh... that's the single good thing about not having one," I joke.

"I guess I shouldn't be complaining... I'm lucky to have a soul," they look at me, seeming apologetic.

"Eh it's more like I'm "lucky" to not have one, I'm literally the only case of a living thing existing without a soul, if I had been let up there I should've started buying lottery tickets or something." I say with a slight smirk.

They look shocked that I'm actually joking about it but eventually they just start laughing.

"...I can't believe you just said that,"

"It's true!"

They don't really know what to say to that and just continue sniggering.

"Ya know...speaking of souls..." I pause when I see their nervous expression. Are their hands shaking..?

...

What did I say?

...I tilt my head slightly, before blinking in sudden realisation, "oh I juuuust realised how that may have sounded...yeah that was my fault,"
