---------------------------------------------------------

These past six months have been the most spectacular time in my life. I have spent almost every single day with Erik the merman. He is the most interesting person I have ever met. I have been so lucky that my job eventually led me to become friends with him. My job had been so stress free...until now.

Erik watched me as I paced back and forth with a strained appearance. His arms are folded in front of him with his tail floating above the water, he has his cheek resting against one of his arms. He only watched for a few more moments until he could not take it anymore. "What's wrong? You have looked upset ever since you came down here to visit me today. Have I done something?" He asked with a slight hesitation in his voice.

My pacing stopped as I turned my attention to Erik. My hand ran through my hair while I processed what he said, "What? No! You have done nothing, I promise you. My mind has been caught up with my work and my job. It's...nothing." I sat down beside the water with a long sigh. His eyes studied mine with an intense gaze, one that always gets my heart skipping a beat.

Erik spoke, his deep voice echoed off the walls around us, "Whatever is going on clearly isn't nothing. Perhaps I could help you, if you tell me what you must do, of course." He lifted himself out of the water with ease, and then moved to sit beside me. The bottom of his tail stayed below the water, creating ripples through the beautiful darkness. My silence only urged him to pry even more. "If it involves anything with the water I guarantee you that I will be an expert on it," he mumbled lowly.

A worried chuckle left my throat after he said that. "I have to make a research paper on something that has never been seen before. There's so many things in the damn ocean you think I would stumble upon something to write about, but no! God! I don't want to lose my job over something like this, I feel like such a failure." My hands covered my face as I fell back on the ground with a small thud, the dirt and gravel dug into my skin but I don't care about that at the moment. Erik's intense gaze stayed on me after I revealed to him what I have to do, despite my vision being concealed I can still feel his eyes on me.

To my surprise, I felt a soft but wet hand touch mine and pulled my hand away from my face. Erik is above me, his hair is slicked back but a few stray hairs hang over his forehead. A couple drops of water hit my face, so he moved back and grabbed my hand to help lift me up. "It seems I can help you. You can do your paper on me, I don't mind. I only have one request...please don't reveal my location."

I gasped with a huge smile on my face. Erik blushed and backed away slightly, his tail slid back into the water more. Before he could move away even more, I grabbed his hand and kissed it. I kissed each finger and the back of his hand as well to show my appreciation. "Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!" I shouted with glee.

I stood up quickly and then raced for my bag that was a few feet away, I pulled out my notebook along with my pencil. I ran back over towards the water, which Erik has now submerged himself in. A squeal escaped me as my pencil hit the paper, "I already know this will be the greatest thing I have ever written! What an amazing specimen you are, Erik. Thank you again!"

"You're welcome...," he mumbled with his mouth halfway out of the water.

...

The next few weeks I based solely on Erik. We were already close friends, but now I know him even better. To my astonishment, Erik gladly agreed for every question I asked him and every test I ran on him. He's such a shy person, I had no idea he would be okay with this sort of thing. During the whole testing period, Erik always had a smile or a blush plastered on his face. If only he had legs, I would love to see that alluring smile every place I went.

At my job things only got better and better, all my writings and studies received more attention than ever before once I proved the existence of merpeople. I have met other scientists that I have always looked up to, and we talk about my discoveries. The hard part though is keeping my promise to Erik; now so many other people want to study this merman. I wish I knew where other creatures like Erik could be found, but I honestly have no idea. The ocean is gigantic, they could be anywhere. Erik refused to tell me where he used to live before staying in the lake under the opera house, which I completely understand, but the scientist in me so badly aches for that knowledge.

I made my way back down to the lake where my wonderful partner in science lives. "Erik!" I shouted with a twinge of excitement. My voice echoed off the walls and water and alerted Erik of my presence. He swam up and pulled himself out of the water. He asked, "So, how are things going now?"

"Amazing! I can't begin to tell you how lovely things have been going. I wanted to thank you...for everything. I brought some human snacks for you to try! I'd say they're quite tasty." I took my bag off and opened it to reveal a few cookies and different types of candies. He hummed softly as he examined the contents, "I would love to try some, thank you." I grabbed the chocolate chip cookie and handed it to Erik, he grabbed it from me gently. His hand ended up brushing against mine, we both blushed and looked away from one another. Gosh, why does he make me feel this way?

Erik took a bite of the cookie, and once he did it's almost like his eyes lit up with stars. "This is delicious!" He exclaimed. "It's a shame I never had anything like this before. Thank you so much. I love getting to try a piece from your world, it means everything to me. I love you." He said without thinking. My eyes widened at that last bit, and that made him notice what he said. His whole face blushed a bright red, "I meant that I love your world! It's so different from my own. Uhm...damn it, I wish I never spoke." Erik slides back into the water, like he always does when he's embarrassed.

I quickly moved in closer and kissed his cheek before he could hide his face, "I love your world too." His eyes stared into my own with a wild look, after a few moments of awkward silence he mumbled, "Woah..." I giggled at his cuteness. I moved back and took out the rest of my snacks, "Don't go, you must try more." He listened quietly and sat beside me, and the rest of the evening we ate snacks and talked about the world above.
