Chapter Twenty Six Carter
“I’m losing my voice,” said Vic hoarsely. We had been pushing ourselves to get this scene perfect for the past week. We had finished the music and it was sounding perfect after rewriting it so many times I had lost count.
“It’s almost the end of the day. Let’s take a break. Maybe you won’t talk if your voice hurts,” I joked with her.
“When are you going to show up at the party?” she asked.
“I’m picking up Isabella before nine and I think we wants to grab a bite before we get there so expect us closer to ten or ten thirty,” I replied. I knew Vic was coming over around and the two of them were planning on taking over the bathroom to get ready.
“Well, just watch yourself around your girlfriend. After I’m done with Eva, you won’t be able to stop yourself from drooling all over her,” she said.
I looked around to make sure that nobody was close enough to hear what Vic had said. I wasn’t comfortable with people knowing my feelings for Eva, even if I had already told her myself. Vic grinned at me, she found every chance she got to tease me.
“I’ll be sure to keep myself in check,” I said.
“What if I said I can give you a chance to get close to her without Isabella or Owen noticing,” said Vic, her eyes had this shine in them that said she was up to something.
“Why would I need time alone to get closer to her? I’ve told you before. She doesn’t like me,” I replied.
“Stop lying Carter. You and her are so much alike it makes me want to grab both of your heads and hit them together a few times,” she growled. Just then Mr. Conner called the group together so I was saved from any more questions from Vic. I quickly joined the circle.
I felt Isabella beside me as she leaned into my side, her head resting on my shoulder. I interlaced my fingers with hers. But even with my girlfriend beside me, I was still thinking about what Vic had said to me. What was she going to do?
We were dismissed for the day. I felt my arm being grabbed and pulled back, causing me to slow so I was walking beside Isabella. We stopped by Isabella’s locker before heading to the car. I didn’t need to stop at mine because I already had everything I needed. Vic was already at the car. She must have already had her stuff ready. When she saw us she waved and turned and opened her door when I unlocked the car.
“Are we waiting for Eva?” I asked.
“She was talking to Mr. Fisher and said she would be right out. I think I see her,” Vic replied.
I glanced over and saw that she was indeed on her way. Well actually, she was on the steps with Owen’s tongue down her throat. I resisted the urge to gag as they headed our way. Today I was the only one that didn’t feel like talking. Everybody was chatting about the upcoming party. Vic didn’t get out when I dropped Isabella off, so I assumed she was just going to come right over and make an evening of getting ready.
When we got home we noticed we were the first one’s home again. Eva and Vic got a snack from the kitchen and then headed to the living room. I headed right upstairs, trying to stay out of Eva’s way because, I wasn’t sure she wanted me around. But eventually, I could no longer ignore my stomach’s pitiful pleas for food. With a grunt, I turned off my computer that I had been mindless surfing the internet on and got out of my chair and headed down to the kitchen. As I was wondering around looking for food, my phone vibrated in my pants pocket. I pulled it out and rolled my eyes, she was in the house but she couldn’t come talk to me face to face.
‘Have you thought about my offer?’ the message said.
‘Vic give it up. Not going to happen,’ I texted back.
The response was fast, ‘We’ll see about that.’
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. What did she mean? I didn’t have to wait long until I heard footsteps heading towards the kitchen. Thinking it was Vic, I stood confidently with my arms crossed over my chest. So I was taken aback when it was Eva who rounded the corner instead.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Well, I was told that I had to come and take your phone away from you. What does Vic want with your phone?” she asked.
“No reason really. She’s just mad that I didn’t listen to her during class,” I replied.
“Well an order is an order. I can’t go back to her telling her that I didn’t even try to get it from you,” she said lunging towards me.
I wasn’t scared of her, but I was interested in if she would give chase. So I ran to the living room, expecting Vic to be there, but the room was empty. Eva charged after me and was arm’s length away when I turned to her, just managing to grab her before her body crashed into mine. I easily picked her up and tossed her small frame onto the couch and pushing my body into hers to keep her from getting up.
“Give up and I’ll be nice,” I said after I had pinned her hands.
“Never,” she growled and struggled to get out of my unwavering grasp.
“Okay, well remember I was going to be kind to you,” I said and began tickling her neck, where she was most ticklish. She struggled harder against me and I had to resist the urge to kiss her. And I nearly gave in, but somebody clearing their throat and the doorway had me almost leaping off Eva. Vic was leaning against the doorway, a smirk across her face.
“So Eva, did you get the phone?” she asked.
“Oh, she wanted my phone? I thought she wanted to be tickled. My bad. If you give up, I’ll stop. If not, I’ll pin you both down and tickle you both,” I threatened.
“I give,” said Eva. I looked at her for a second to make sure she was serious before I released my hold on her hands and got off of her and let her up from the couch.
She and Vic left the room without another word. I sat on the couch, my hunger forgotten until my stomach growled again. Getting off the couch, I wondered back to the kitchen once again. I grabbed a blueberry muffin from the counter top.
My phone vibrated again and I rolled my eyes as I saw it was. I opened the message and read, “Still not going to happen?”
