My heart dances as I safely pack away the ultrasound photograph into my suitcase. The dancing pauses when I realise that Rocky won't be there at the next one. He leaves tomorrow night and It was taking everything in my body not to burst out crying.
"Scarlett?" His voice calls out from the living room.
I wipe my cheeks roughly before I leave my bedroom, so I can reply properly. When I enter the living room my entire body freezes dramatically.
Sitting on the sofa was a brand new art kit, multiple books and a letter writing kit.
"What is this?" I whisper in slight awe, as I reach out and touch the items.
He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly, "I figured that, in-case things got overwhelming you've got new paint supplies to distract you, next to them are pregnancy books and I...I also got you a letter writing kit, so we could keep up to date with all of the pregnancy stuff and you can send any pictures or something."
My heart soars completely, "But you've never let me write you letters before."
He shrugs, "Things are different now."
"And you'll write back to me?"
He rolls his eyes, "Yes, I'll write back to you dumbass."
"I know the art stuff should be my favourite but I think the letter kit wins. Thank you so much, you didn't have to get me anything. I really appreciate it, I appreciate it that much that I'm not even going to try and hug you."
He laughs briefly, "Good because we both know I'll just push you away."
My cheeks burn brightly, "I've also got a little something for you as well, I was going to wait into tomorrow but seem as we're in the spirt of giving gifts."
I quickly race into my room and grab the item sitting proudly on my chest of drawers. I shakily pass it over to him, gnawing down on my bottom lip as I await for his reaction.
"Holy fuck." He whispers as he gingerly places the tiny canvas into his hands.
I rock back and forth on my heels, "Well, you were adamant about me keeping the scan picture because they only gave us one copy. But I wanted you to have one, you know in-case there was just a day, you needed a little bit of hope."
"You managed to capture it exactly."
"Is it okay? I can understand completely if you don't want to take it."
Rocky quickly shakes his head, "No, I want to take it. Thank you."
"I can't believe it's our last night together, I enjoyed having you as my roommate."
"Yeah, it wasn't as painful as I thought it was going to be."
I beam at him, "I think that might be one of the nicest things that you've ever said to me."
He rolls his eyes before slowly making his way towards the balcony, I have no idea whether he wants me to follow but I do regardless.
"I lied before." He states suddenly when we're both sit down, the moonlight and fairy lights I wrapped around the railing our only source of light.
My eyebrows knit together, "What?"
"I do get scared." He admits, "I get every time, I have to go back. And it feels even scarier now because I've got other people to think about."
I let out a shaky breath at his admission, "It's understandable why you're scared. Anyone in your position would be."
"I'm fucking shit scared that I'm going to get hurt again but this time it'll be more serious."
I don't know what the right words are too say, so I hesitantly reach out and intwine our fingers together and to my surprise he doesn't try to pull away.
"I think you are one of the bravest people I've ever met, even long before the military."
He looks at me with a changed expression that makes my heart thump dramatically. My breath hitches as he leans closer inches away from my face.
"This is probably a really bad idea." He whispers.
"Probably."
"Fuck it."
My eyes widen briefly as his lips crash down onto mine, I desperately cling to him as if he's my lifeline. Everything around me feel magical and the world stops spinning.
I let out a small yelp as his large hands firmly place me onto his lap.
"What about your leg?" I ask as we pull apart to catch our breath.
"It's fine." He mutters before kissing me again, I tangle my hands into his hair.
His grip on my waist tightens, as the passion between us intensifies. Almost as if remember who we are and what situation we are currently in, Rocky suddenly halts and pulls away.
"We shouldn't have done that." He murmurs lowly, my heart cracks entirely.
"Probably not."
"I just don't want to lead you on. We need to think clearly, we can't complicate things when we've got a child on the way."
All my dreams of him reciprocating my feelings suddenly shatters.
I nod slowly as I climb off him, "You're right."
"I'm sorry, I'm a total dick for doing that."
I shrug weakly as I sit back in the chair I was previously on, "It's fine, I promise. I really appreciate your honesty."
"I hope I've not made things awkward."
I shake my head, "You could never make things between us awkward."
He lets out a sharp breath, "Good."
I want nothing more then to leave this situation entirely but knowing this is my last night with him is what prompts me to stay.
"I keep thinking of baby names." I pipe up, in a desperate attempt to wipe away any lingering feelings of uncomfortableness.
"Oh yeah?"
I nod slowly, "Yeah, I'm currently stuck between two."
He gives me a look, the teasing glint in his eyes gives me the reassurance that we're going to be okay, "Please tell me, it isn't Sammy."
I laugh, "No, it isn't Sammy. I like the name Violet for a girl, it kind of carries on the tradition from my mom. Her name was Amber. So we'd all be named after colours."
Rocky's expression changes, "You've not really spoke about your mom."
I shrug, "I've been trying my best not to think about it, I just know it really fucking sucks that she isn't going to be here to meet my baby."
"She's with you, she's always with you."
"I know. I just wish that she was physically here."
"I know. I like the name Violet, just for the record. What's the other name?"
"Oh it's for a boy, It's Arlo."
His face lights up briefly, "That's my grandfathers name, I think you've met him before."
I smile fondly, "I know. I remember him coming to one of your boxing matches, he was really proud of you."
"I think you've chose really two good names there."
"That's it? You're not going to challenge any of them."
"Meh. Don't fix what isn't broken."
