The moment you entered high school, you felt that some things were going to be different. Being a year younger than Aran, you knew that middle school was much different from elementary school. You were a relatively smart kid, so you felt like the work you'd be given wouldn't be a problem for you to handle. It was another matter that caused you to worry. You had no idea if the Miya twins lived close enough to you to be able to go to the same middle school. You never shared a school with them before, unless the volleyball center for kids counted as a school. That was the only way you knew the twins in the first place.
Now, you weren't unhappy about the possibility that you could be in the same school as them. In fact, you wouldn't mind being able to spend more time with the Miyas. Osamu was nice, and you could easily get along with him. It was Atsumu that made you worry about possibly being in the same school as that pair of twins. You were hoping that Atsumu woudn't continue to be rude to you as you all got older, but you didn't know for sure how things would go. You hoped he'd be a bit nicer, since you've known each other for a while.
However, Atsumu isn't the kind of person to change. Changing wasn't something he liked. And, if he could control it, he wouldn't do it. There are things he can't help changing as he gets older, those things are inevitable. But his personality wasn't gonna just suddenly do a 180. In fact, he might end up becoming a full on bully. Not out of malicious intent, just because he's never had a crush before and doesn't know how to act around you.
The morning you leave your house, Aran is outside waiting for you with a smile on his face. "Let me take you to school today, before I start getting busy with the volleyball club."
You nod, walking over to him. "Thanks, Aran. I guess I'll also be gettin' busy with volleyball soon. How long does it take from submittin' the club application before we actually get to go to club activities?"
The boy hums, beginning to walk by your side. "Usually the first years don't start until the second week of school. They'll notify you of when you'll be introduced to the current team. But, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to play as a first year. I wasn't put in the lineup last year. Luckily, the team added me as one of the wing spikers this year. Even if you're probably one of the best players in the whole girls' division, there's still a chance they won't put you in the lineup since you're a first year."
"That kinda sucks. I wanna play all the time. I'll just be bored if they don't put me on the court."
"Yeah, but you might be lucky enough to be put on the bench as an extra player."
You huff out a breath, looking at the scenery you past by while walking to school. "Man, actual clubs seem so sucky."
Aran chuckles, patting your shoulder as a form of comforting you. "Don't mind. You're a good player, so you might get put on the starting lineup by the end of the year."
"How many people even join the girls' volleyball club?"
He pauses, trying to think of the answer. "Actually, I don't know. I'm only speaking through experience with the boys' team. You might not have anywhere near as many people on the girls' team. I don't actually know. I haven't even checked on the girls' volleyball club."
You look at him from the corner of your eye. "So ya have no clue whether or not ya just lied to me about everythin' ya've just said?"
"No clue whatsoever. Sorry about that. Maybe you'll have good luck, and even be able to start going to practices today after school. I have no clue. You'll find out all that information today at school."
You try not to burst out laughing. "I'll text ya the moment I find out, in case I don't meet up with ya for lunch."
Aran nods, taking a quick glance at you from the corner of his eye before flicking his attention back to the path in front of you two. "Alright. If you can meet up for lunch, come to the roof. It's a really nice spot to just relax."
You nod, looking carefully as you walk through the entrance gate of the middle school. "Sounds like a plan."
He grins. "How do you like the look of the campus so far?"
"Looks good. Can't wait to spend the next 3 years here. I wonder if I'll have any interestin' classmates I can make friends with."
"Don't forget to try to be friends with the other girls in the volleyball club."
"I won't. I think I'll do a pretty good job of befriendin' anyone I'll be spendin' any amount of time with."
Aran rests his hand on your shoulder. "Good. I look forward to seeing you grow even more. I need to go this way now." He points off in a certain direction. "Good luck with the entrance ceremony. I'll see you later." He starts walking away from you.
"See ya!" You call out to him, turning to where the entrance ceremony will be held. You walk alone to the spot, finding a place to stand in.
"No way." A voice says from beside you.
You turn, and who do you see? None other than the Miya twins. "Small world. Nice to see ya, Osamu, Atsumu. How was yer break?"
Osamu offers a slight smile. "Nice seeing ya too. It was good, kinda borin'. How was yer break?"
"Ah, well, it was kinda lonely. I had no one to spend the time with, since Aran was busy with the volleyball club. I was just practicin' serves in my backyeard. Oh, I can do jump serves now!"
"Cool. Hear that, Sumu? She can do jump serves now. Maybe ya can get tips on how to do it from her with me."
You smile at the twin. "I'd love to help ya guys out."
Atsumu snorted. "I don't need help from a girl. I'm perfectly capable of teachin' myself how to do a simple jump serve. I bet she can't even do a jump floater."
You look over at him, feeling a bit nervous to respond to his statement. "Oh, not yet. I'm currently bein' taught by my mom, though. If you two want, you can always come over to my house. Everyone in my family either plays or used to play, so there shouldn't be a problem to ask them for help. I think my older brother would like havin' more people over to practice with."
Osamu nods his head. "I'd love that. I could always use more help in learnin' how to strengthen my play style. How old is yer brother?"
"21. He takes after our dad. He wants to go pro, but he's still in college and hasn't gotten an offer from the team our dad used to be a part of."
This peaked Atsumu's interested. "What pro team was yer dad on?"
You look over, trying to smile at him. "MSBY Black Jackals. Why?"
Osamu chuckled. "Sumu's been lookin' up to players in MSBY. He really wants to be a part of their team after high school. Even if he tries turnin' down yer offer, I'll drag 'im to yer house. I think he'll talk to yer dad a lot."
You giggle. "Ok. I look forward to seein' more of ya."
He nods, taking a quick glance at his brother. "Ya joinin' the volleyball club here?"
"Yeah. I was gonna put in my application at lunch. Maybe the three of us can meet up and go do all of that together."
"Sounds like a plan."
Atsumu looked away, crossing his arms over his chest. "Whatever. Don't expect me to be yer friend or anythin'. What class are ya even in?"
"Uh, class 2?"
Atsumu turned his head away. "She's in our class, Samu."
Osamu grinned. "Uh huh. Is there a problem, Sumu?"
"Shut yer trap. I just didn't wanna be stuck with some dumb volleyball playin' girl like 'er for the whole year."
The small smile you had gets completely wiped off your face. "It's not my fault."
Osamu shakes his head, grabbing your hand and pulling you away from his twin. "Don't mind 'im. He's just a jerk for no reason. Let's make the most of this year, yeah?"
"Well... alright, Osamu."
"Call me Samu, since we're friends."
You smile at him. "Sure thing, Samu."
Meanwhile, Atsumu turned red. "I can't believe Samu. Is he tryna make me mad?" He lowers his voice, it becomes almost inaudible. "I wanted to hold 'er hand." He sulks, slowly dragging his feet as he follows you and his brother from a distance.
