Jeremiah's POV
I took a deep breath in as I came down from the car and waved the driver goodbye. I was standing at Melvin's house, remembering what had happened the last time I was here. I seriously needed to apologize for how I behaved, especially since my conscience wouldn't let me rest and I haven't spoken to him for a while too. He had been a good friend and a godly mentor for quite a long time in my life and I wasn't ready to give up on this relationship too.
"Oh Jerry, Good afternoon. Please come in." Nancy, one of the helps who was very familiar with me opened the door and let me in.
"Thanks. Is Melvin home? I really need to see him now." I said, still standing as she nodded.
"Okay then. I'll let him know. Would you like anything to eat or drink? "She asked, smiling.
"Oh no, don't bother. I'm fine." I said.
"You know you can't object, right?" She asked, grinning widely as I laughed.
"Madam won't go easy on me if she finds out that you visited today and I didn't offer you anything. "
She said as I chuckled."Okay then. I'll have some juice."
"Have a seat please, I'll let him know you're around. Madam just went out few minutes ago." She said, turning to leave as I continued standing.
Few minutes later, Melvin came downstairs, grinning at me like I was a lost treasure that had found it's way back to his house. Before I could say anything, he engulfed me in a bear hug while chuckling.
"I'm so sorry-" I said as he cut me off.
"Oh my boy is back!" He said, releasing me from the hug and ruffling my hair as I stared at him in confusion.
"Huh? What's going on?" I asked as he let out a deep chuckle then led me to the dining table.
"Come, sit. Let's eat lunch." He said simply as I tried to apologize again but he cut me off, telling me to be quiet as the help served us. He engaged me in several conversations, cracked some jokes and made the atmosphere light and welcoming. After eating, we went to the balcony to talk.
"What's up?" He asked, leaning in his chair. I moved uneasily in my chair. I didn't even know what to feel especially after he had treated me to a good meal and acted like nothing happened the last time I visited. I decided to apologize.
"Mel, I'm super sorry for the way I acted last month...I shouldn't have reacted in such a manner, but I guess my emotion took the best of me. Am I forgiven?" I asked, smiling sheepishly as he burst into laughter again.
"Oh Jerry, you'll still be my little boy even after you've grown up." He said, still laughing as I pouted.
"Look, it's normal for anyone in your shoes to have acted that way, or even worse. I wasn't angry, I was just worried 'cause, Mide and I couldn't contact you after that. What happened? Why didn't you pick your calls?" He asked.
"I apologize again. At first, it was anger but later it was guilt. I felt bad for talking to you that way and I didn't know how to face you.."
"That's okay, it's all in the past now. So, everything good?" He asked as a maid brought a tray of drinks and cookies and placed it on the center table in front of us.
"Well...my Mom eventually convinced me to forgive Dad a few weeks ago and it felt real good. Things were good for a while, he was happy, jovial, almost like his old self but then everything changed since grandpa's death. He was really close to his dad and now that he's gone, he hurting real bad and he has shut the rest of us out again. Also, Mom says his sorrowful mood is also because of the problems he is having at work....I've been praying but Mel, nothing seems to be changing and seeing my dad look so sad and haggard is really disheartening. " I said as he smiled sadly.
"You see, your Dad and i are childhood friends but ever since he got married, he became distant and we just kind of became strangers and it hurts that he's going through a lot but he never shares anything with me." He said.
"Why? Why did he grow distant?"
"Well, according to him, he didn't want any form of interference from a third party in his family."
"Third party? "I asked, a bit amused. How does sharing your problems with a close, godly, childhood friend involve a third party?
"He said that he didn't want to share any of his family's problems with me because he didn't want the interference of a third party to cause further issues in his home." He explained.
"It hurt me badly, since I just wanted to offer help to my brother but he rejected me and he didn't trust me enough to share any of his problems with me." He said.
Wow! He even referred to him as his brother! That means they must've been real close."Brother?"
"He's my brother in Christ and my closest friend. Jer, I may not have the right words for you now but I know someone who can help you. Someone who can show you the way out of your problems, the one who can shine His light in this dark situation you're in now....Can we pray for him?" He said as I sighed, smiling.
"You know what? My Dad needs to hear all what you've just said now and yes let's pray for him." I said as he grinned then led the prayer.
"Dear God, you are the father to the fatherless. Help Brown to see and accept you as the father who never passes away and the father who can help bring him out of whatever issue he's facing now, both at work and at home. In Jesus name, Amen." He said, raising his head.
"Is that all?!" I asked in shock as he chortled.
"See Jer, our problems might be as big as a mountain but faith in God is all we need, no matter how short the prayer is." He said, winking at me as I heard Aunt Mide's voice.
"Jer? Is that you?" She asked, stepping into the balcony where Melvin and i sat. Immediately she saw me, she hugged me tightly then smacked my head before letting go as Melvin watched us, amused.
"Ow! "I said, rubbing my head as she glared playfully at me.
"Now don't you dare do such a thing again! You gave us such a fright!" She said, sitting beside her husband as I pouted.
