   Jeremiah's POV

We all came down from the car, looking confused at why our front door would be left ajar with a huge bag on the front porch.  I looked around the compound and I noticed something that wasn't there before. I was about to say something but Josie beat me to it.

"Hey, isn't that dad's car? The one he left with the day he travelled?" She asked, pointing at Dad's favourite Mercedes.
We all looked in the direction of where she pointed and sure enough, she was right! Before anyone else said anything, Jemima squealed and ran into the house.

"Dad's home, dad's home!" She said excitedly. For a moment, I thought how Jemima was supposed to be the elder sister but how Josie always acted calm and mature.

good thing she can't hear my thoughts, she would've gone bonkers if she ever heard me say that out loud.

Mum was also surprised and happy but she tried not to let it show too much as the rest of us walked into the house. The butler collected our bags and left and Mum asked a help if Dad had truly come back and she said yes! But as Mum and her were talking, I saw a girl come out of the guest room beside our grand staircase.

"Mum who's she? Is she the new maid?" Josie asked. Mum looked confused too as the girl greeted her.

"I don't think she's a maid, Josie. She looks too young to be one and I don't think a new maid would've come to our house without us knowing first." I whispered to her.

"Good evening dear." Mum said simply, flashing her a smile as she walked upstairs. Josie and I watched the girl carry the huge bag at the door and struggle with it to the guest room.

My kind side would've volunteered to help her but I was just too overwhelmed with the whole situation to offer help. Josie and I went upstairs to Dad's room  where he sat on the bed, talking to Mum.

"I'm so glad to be back home with my family once more." Dad said, smiling broadly as he looked at everyone across the dining table.

"We're glad to have you back too, Dad." Josie said, grinning.

"Me too Honey." Mum said, smiling at him.

"Me three, Dad." Jemima said. I just stared at them. Don't get me wrong. I was definitely glad to see Dad but I just had a lot of questions on my mind. But now, I knew I had to say something to take their eyes off me.

Yes,
They were all staring at me now, waiting for me to say something.

"Yeah, same here Dad." I said, smiling as he nodded.

"Okay children. I'm glad to see you all too. But now, I want to make an introduction. I know you all have questions concerning this beautiful, young lady seated here." Dad said, pointing at the same girl who had taken her bag into the guest room.

She smiled a little as Dad continued. I saw Jemima look at the girl with a bored expression and Josie's own was unreadable while I just stared at her, blankly and Mum smiled warmly at her.

"Everyone, meet Vera, the only daughter of the community heads of Omidun town. And Vera, meet my lovely family." Dad said.

"Nice to meet you, Vera." Josie and I said as Jemima flashed a smile at her. I know that smile- it's fake.

"It's nice meeting you all." She said politely, smiling at us.

"Omidun? What's that?" Jemima asked as I leaned in closer to her and whispered in her ear.

"I think you meant 'where's that'? It's a place, not a thing." I said as she shot me her signature poker-face look.

"That was where I traveled to dear." Dad simply said.

    "Why?" Josie asked.

"I had a project to complete for the company there." He said.

"Dad, you're not done with your introduction." I said.

"Really? What haven't I said?" Dad asked.

"You haven't told us why she's here-" Jemima said as Mum cut her off.

"Be nice, Jemima. She's our guest." Mum said with a warning tone.

"It's okay. Well, she's here because she's an exceptionally brilliant student and would start schooling in your school from next week. I'm placing her on a scholarship." Dad said, sipping his wine as Jemima shouted.

   "Huh?!" She asked.

"What's the matter dear? You got any problem with that?" Mum asked.

"N-no Mum. I was just surprised. "She said.

"Kids, you know I would always tell you of my plans but this time, I couldn't because of the bad network problems in Omidun. I would've told you more about her. Well, her both parents have passed and since none of her relatives came over, I had to help her. It's the least I can do for her in return for her late parent's kindness." Dad said. I looked at her and saw that she was no longer eating. She looked like she was going to cry.

"Oh my! Sorry about that Vera. You're most welcome to our house." Josie, my ever thoughtful sister said.

"Thank you so much." She replied faintly as Jemima huffed and stormed out of the dining room

What was wrong with her?
