"Hello? Dad? Is that you?" Jemima asked, her eyes wide open like she heard something unbelievable.
"Put it on speaker" Josie whispered as we huddled up beside her.
"Jemima it's me, I'm so sorry for not reaching out to you and your siblings. The network over here is really bad and it's not easy to make phone calls- " Dad said as Jemima stifled a cry.
"Oh dad-" she started.
"Dad where are you now? When would you be back home?" Josie asked as Jemima handed the phone to her and sat on her bed, looking really surprised and tired at the same time.
"Josie, is that you? Where's your brother?"
"We're all here dad, please when are you coming home? Mum's- "Josie replied as I jabbed her gently.
"Kids, I'll be home soon, okay? Sooner than you expect and I'm coming with a surprise." He said as we all looked at each other, confused.
"Surprise?" I asked
"Yes Jeremiah, a surprise. Where's your Mum? I've tried calling her but she hasn't picked any of her calls. Is everything okay?" Dad asked as Jemima and Josie looked at me, unsure of whether to tell him or not when Jemima blurted the whole thing out.
"Really?! I hope it's not too serious, I'll be home soon. I need to check up on her." He said, sounding panicked.
"It's okay Dad, the doctor said she'll be okay and that it's not serious so we don't have to worry. We trust God to heal her." I said as there was some minutes of silence from Dad's end.
° ° ° ° ° ° °"How do you feel Mum? I've got great news for you!" Josie said, beaming as Mum smiled, nodding. It was the weekend and we went to pick Mum up from the hospital and I must say, she looked more relaxed and better than ever.
"Really? And what would that be darling?" She asked fondly as Josie went on and on, babbling about the phone call we got from Dad two days ago and how he had said that he had a surprise.
"Mum what do you think the surprise would be?" She asked as Mum laughed, shrugging.
"I've got no idea honey." She said as Jemima squealed and I closed my ears tightly. Gosh! How on earth was she able to sound so shrill?
"Why'd you do that?"I asked, glaring slightly at her as she looked at Mum with dreamy eyes.
"Mum do you think Dad has finally agreed to get me a Chihuahua? That's probably the surprise!" She said as I rolled my eyes and Josie laughed.
"I doubt it-" I said as she snapped, unexpectedly.
"Of course you do. You and Josie never help to convince Dad about that Chi-poo I've always wanted-"
"Huh? What's that?" Josie asked as Mum looked at Jemima, amused.
"Is that the name you plan to give the dog you'll never have?" I asked, as I burst into laughter and she scowled at me.
"No Jer that's what it's called!" She said.
"Okay Kids, that's enough. No more arguements. And Jerry, no teasing your sister." Mum said as I nodded respectfully and Jemima sulked.
"Oh Mum, I'm starving. What do you say about us getting some lunch at the new fancy restaurant that opened recently?" Josie said, trying to lighten up the mood.
"Uhm, I think I want some home cooked meals first. We can go there for dinner." She said.
"Okay Mum. I'm cool with that." She said as I nodded in agreement and Jemima faked a smile at Josie and turned to face the window.
The driver had just entered our compound when I saw a huge bag near the front door and the door itself, wide open. What's going on here?
