Brown clutched his stomach, groaning in pain as two hefty guards picked him up and dragged him to where Mr Jedediah sat. They dropped him harshly at his feet as Mr Jedediah's jaw ticked."Do you know the rules of cooperation? "He asked, out of the blues as Brown struggled to get to his feet. Immediately he was able to balance his weight on both legs, he felt a painful blow at the back of his head. He fell to the floor, holding his head in severe pain as Mr Jedediah continued, unfazed by how pitiful Brown looked. He signalled his men to stop hitting him as Brown struggled to suppress the intense pain he felt.
"Anwer me." He said, his voice, oddly calm and his smile, wierd.
how can such a wicked man smile so easily? Brown thought as he eyed him weakly, still sitting on the floor.
"I d-don't know what you're asking me."he replied as Mr Jedediah smiled grimly.
"Who were you speaking with just now?" Mr Jedediah asked as Brown scowled deeply.
"And how's that your business? Since when did our agreement contain monitoring each other's phone calls?" He asked as Mr Jedediah tried to hide his irritation and signalled to his men to stay put.
"What were you telling him? "He asked as Brown scoffed.
"Oh so you know it's a 'him' huh?! Then you tell me of our discussion-"he said as a slap hit his cheek, almost immediately.
"Brown, looks like you really don't know what game you're playing now right? "
"I'm no gamer." Brown replied, his voice full of anger and regret.
"This's a warning. You know what you did, don't try it ever again." Mr Jedidiah said, about to stand up and leave.
"How can I ever repeat what I never did?" Brown asked, his voice barely a whisper but loud enough for Jedediah to stop in his tracks.
"It depends on how eager you are to relive your punishment." He said, a twisted smirk on his face as he left.
God help me.
Brown whispered as he watched the retreating backs of the bodyguards. He was beyond exhausted and he didn't know if he would be able to stand on his own again ever since the bodyguards beat him up because Mr Jedediah thought he was telling another person about what had happened to the community heads.
Why on earth did he have to do that?!
He said, looking at his smashed phone on the floor, few feet away from where he sat.
"Overzealous guard". He muttered angrily.
°°°°°°°°°°°°"Oh you're welcome Melvin. It's been a while." Mom said cheerily as the butler opened the for him. She came down from the barstool and walked over to where he was.
"Jane! Long time no see. I didn't expect to see you home. How are you?" He said, hugging her gently as she smiled.
"Of course I'm home. Where else would I be?" She asked, laughing like Mel had asked a funny question as they both took their seats.
"Mel!" I shouted, running downstairs as fast as I could before Mom could start any discussion with him that wouldn't let us talk anymore.
"Jer! I've told you times without number to stop running downstairs like that. You could hurt yourself!" Mum scolded as Mel smiled, obviously happy to see me.
"Listen to your Mum Jerry." He playfully scolded, ruffling my hair as I sat beside him.
"Okay then, I guess i'd just leave you both to enjoy your talk." Mum said, emphasizing on 'talk' as Mel laughed and I rolled my eyes. "How 'bout you join us for dinner? It'll be great having you eat with us." Mum said as Mel beamed.
"Sure Ma'am. If you insist." He said as she nodded and left us. Mel's face became serious.
"What's the problem? Your face doesn't look so good." I said, hoping it wasn't as bad as the dream I had earlier...
I mean, what could even be worse than that?
I shuddered at the negative thoughts that floated through my mind."How do I say this?" I heard him mutter. Okay seriously, what's the matter? I don't think I can remember seeing Mel like this ever since I knew him. We were like brothers; we were really close even before he recently got married to Mide and I couldn't think of anything that would make him this worried.
"Just say it as it is...please this suspense Isn't healthy for me." I said as he looked at me, amused then sighed.
"It's your dad-"
."What happened to him?" I asked, at the edge of my seat as Mel sighed- again.
"When was the last time you spoke to your dad?" He asked as I shook my head. I didn't like the way he was beating about the bush.
"Mel-" I said in a warning tone. I guess he got the message because he raised both hands, apologizing.
"Okay, okay I'm sorry. I'll go straight to the point...I'm afraid your dad's in danger-"
"What?!" I shouted as Mel shushed me immediately.
"You see why I was trying not to hit the nail in the head so quickly." He said, a bit annoyed that my voice had startled my Mum.
"Boys is anything the matter?" She asked from the kitchen. I laughed inwardly at the way Mum referred to Mel as a 'boy'.
"No Mum. We're good." I said, pacing around the room.
"What do you mean? How do you know that? I thought you said you both didn't talk again?" I asked without even taking a single breath in between my questions.
"Whoa! easy there. One question at a time." He said.
believe me, I've got more from where those came from. I thought.
"Okay, he called me today and it was very strange cuz he doesn't usually call me unless it's important because of his busy schedule and because we've not talked for a long time so I quickly picked the call and- "
"He talked?!" I asked as he shot me a deadpan look. Okay it was only after I talked that I realized how stupid my question was.
"I won't interrupt again. I'm sorry." I said as he nodded.
"He sounded quite weak and his voice wasn't loud enough...like he didn't want anyone to hear what he was saying."
"So what did he say?" I asked.
"The only thing I can remember is that he said he's made a mistake....his words were quite confusing and the next thing I heard was some shuffling and a loud thud. Then I heard another man's voice telling me not to call his number again."
"What? D-Did he say anything else?" I asked, trying to understand what Mel was saying.
"No. He cut the call immediately. I tried to call again, on my way here but the line was switched off. I-I think he's been kidnapped- "
"Kidnapped?! How can that be your only option?"
"What do you want me to say, Jerry? Isn't that what it looks like?" He asked, visibly stressed out. I rubbed my palms, trying to think of the next action to take. We both sat in silence for a long while.
"So what do we do now? I mean, I have no idea where he is- no one has any idea where he is or how else to contact him...or do we call the police?" I asked as Mel sighed.
"I told you, Jerry so that we can hopefully find a solution...I didn't include your Mum in this discussion because I don't want her to get too worried when the matter may not be as serious as it may seem-"
"What happened to my husband? " Mum asked, standing in the doorway and looking very weak. Before Mel and I could get out of the shock that she has been listening to our conversation since, she slumped.
Mum!
