Seungmin walked the crowded hallways of the high school with a deliberate, purposeful stride. His head was always slightly bowed, eyes fixed on the ground as he navigated the sea of students. It was a well-known fact that he was the straight-A student, his academic excellence celebrated and often envied by his peers. He wore his discipline like armor, a shield against the distractions of teenage life.
His parents had instilled in him the belief that success was the highest virtue. They had driven him hard, often reminding him that achievements in academics were the only way to secure a prosperous future and, as a result, Seungmin had adopted a rigid routine.
In contrast, Minho was known for his easy charm and endless energy. Minho had developed a quiet but persistent crush on Seungmin. He had admired the younger’s dedication from afar, but he was frustrated by his emotional distance. The more Minho tried to engage with him, the more he seemed to retreat into his academic cocoon.
One autumn afternoon, Minho decided to take matters into his own hands. He approached Seungmin in the library, where he was engrossed in a stack of textbooks.
“Hey, Seungmin-ah,” Minho began, leaning against the edge of the table. “I was thinking about getting a group together for a study session this weekend. You should join us.”
Seungmin glanced up, his eyes meeting Minho’s before returning to his books. “I appreciate the offer, but I’ve got a lot to catch up on,” he replied calmly.
Minho sighed, frustration evident in his expression. “You’re always buried in work. Don’t you ever take a break? It’s important to balance things out.”
Seungmin shook his head slightly, a faint smile touching his lips. “I’m fine. Really. I just prefer to focus on my studies.”
Meanwhile, Seungmin’s friends—Jeongin, Changbin, Felix, and Hyunjin—had been trying their best to pull him into their social circle. They had invited him to countless events, from movie nights to weekend outings. Every time, Seungmin had politely declined, citing schoolwork as the reason.
Jeongin, who was particularly persistent, cornered Seungmin in the cafeteria one day. “Come on, hyung. We’re all going to the arcade tonight. Just one evening off from studying won’t hurt.”
Seungmin looked up, his gaze softening slightly. “I’m sorry, but I really need to finish this assignment. Maybe next time?”
Changbin, sitting nearby, threw up his hands in exasperation. “You always say that! You never take any time for yourself.”
Felix added, “We’re not asking you to drop everything. Just come hang out with us for a few hours.”
Hyunjin nodded in agreement. “It’s important to have some fun, too. We’re all in this together.”
Seungmin gave a small, apologetic smile. “I understand where you’re coming from, but I have my priorities. Maybe another time.”
——
Seungmin felt the weight of the world on his shoulders every day. His parents’ expectations were like a shadow, always looming, always pressing. They had always been overtly demanding, their constant reminders of the importance of academic success left no room for doubt. The pressure to be perfect was immense, and even though Seungmin knew he was overburdened, he felt trapped in a cycle he couldn’t escape.
