Skyler entered the gym. She was normally having PE if she ever went there. Uncertain, Skyler decided to take a seat at one of the red bleachers. She glimpsed Jason sitting with a few other boys. Skyler, not wanting to give Ella the satisfaction of letting her friend see her sit with Jason, deliberately passed him, taking her seat next to Ella. Then, someone caught her eye. A young boy with blonde hair was sitting by himself.
Skyler frowned. I don't recognize him... maybe he's new. And kinda handsome....
Skyler sympathetically decided that she was going to join him. For research purposes of course!
Skyler sat down next to him and smiled kindly.
"Hey!" she greeted warmly, extending her hand to invite him for a handshake. The boy didn't answer. Skyler lifted an eyebrow. She was not used to being ignored... She didn't like it. Taking a deep breath, she forced the frown off her face.
Let's try that again.
"My name's Skyler, what's yours?"
The boy blinked slowly, before replying hesitantly. "I'm Peter..." He shyly murmured.
Skyler smiled, satisfied by his action of response, even if it was only slight. "Nice to meet you Peter, welcome to Wintergreen High!" She beamed, not bothering to puzzle herself about the sudden unexplained burst of confidence she had somehow acquired. "Do you have a girlfriend?"
Peters eyes widened. answering for him she shrugged. "You don't. Well with you being so handsome you probably won't be single for long!" She pointed out encouragingly.Peter only nodded, turning away. Skyler frowned. Rude! She thought, a little bit hurt by the new kid's avoidance. Skyler shrugged it off, refusing to let him know that he'd gotten to her. If he was going to be grumpy, she'd deal with it. With this sort of attitude, Skyler probably shouldn't even try with him. But she rejected the option as soon as it entered her thoughts. No! He's going to get my friendship whether he wants it or not! She decided firmly. Why am I so drawn to him? Although she was determined to befriend him, Skyler guessed it would be best to leave him be. For now.
Skyler jumped when a voice ahead diverted her attention from the stubborn boy. Mrs. Colson... She groaned inwardly, turning her attention to the teacher respectfully.
Mrs. Colson was a hunched over lady with white wisps of hair waving from her dry, wrinkled scalp. Her cracked lips were worse, and she always licked them repeatedly to cover an unhealthy dryness. Her chest heavily rose and fell with ragged sighs and gasps. Glasses sat on the end of her pruny nose, and her pale blue eyes gave the students an icy glare with each wheezy breath.
Mrs. Colson half staggered, half walked into the center of the gym, entering with uneven steps. Her hips rotated stiffly as she stopped to stand in front of the bleachers.
Skyer stifled a shiver at the creepy aging presence. How is she still standing! Skyler wondered incredulously, contemplating how such an elderly woman had been chosen to teach students active and advanced skills in her condition.
A sudden silence fell around her, but Skyler was too engrossed in her thoughts to notice. It took her a few moments before she noticed the stillness. Puzzled, Skyler brought herself back to the present. Why has everyone stopped talking? She wondered, blinking in confusion. She froze, realizing that two white, loosely tied sneakers were pointed towards her, suggesting that someone was now standing directly in front of her. Raising her head slowly, her eyes traveled over blue jeans all the way up to a white baggy tank top.
Skyler stiffened when her eyes finally rose high enough to meet the terrible cold gaze of the outfit's owner. She flinched backwards in horror, swallowing nervously. Mrs. Colson was glaring right down at her! It took Skyler a minute to recover from the trauma.
She met the teacher's stern gaze shakily. "Uh... g-good evening Mrs. Colson...." She forced herself to speak, desperate to break the uncomfortable silence. Mrs. Colson didn't respond, and Skyler was pretty sure that she hadn't even heard her at all. Seriously! How is she a PE teacher? The question repeated itself in her mind for the fiftieth time.
Mrs. Colson finally spoke after a heart stopping moment. "Pay attention young lady!" she pointed a shaky finger down at her. "Did you not hear me?" she growled. Skyler rolled her eyes. "You're one to talk..." She muttered under her breath, too quiet for Mrs. Colson to hear. Though that wasn't a hard thing to do.
"There will be no eye rolling miss Shyler Acornland!"
Skyler bit her lip to prevent herself from correcting the teacher. Skyler Oakland, not Acornland! She thought indignantly, but was smart enough not to object.
Mrs Colson glowered. "Get with your partner right now!" she almost snarled the command, pointing in the direction of an unoccupied Jason, arms beckoning flirtatiously.
"Come on Skyler Cat." he winked cockily.
Skyler groaned. "You again?" She walked up to Jason reluctantly. Why did the universe hate her?
