"Hey, wait up smart guy!" Skyler called from behind. Jason smiled, opening the door.
"After you, miss." he gestured politely.
Skyler smirked. You don't have to be all polite just be yourself. She thought.
"Don't mind if I do, sir," she said mockingly.
She pushed him back outside. "Ladies first." She invited him cheekily, prompting him to be his silly self.
Jason grinned. "Okay fine, be like that." he folded his arms, pretending to be offended.
Skyler grabbed his shoulder and he tried not to notice the warmth of her gentle touch.
"Come on, Jason, it's too cold out." she prompted.
Jason shook his head. "Nope. I'm staying right here, until a lady comes through."
Skyler nodded. "Exactly, so make it easier for yourself and come in already."
He smirked, sitting down cross legged stubbornly.
"No thanks."
Skyler rolled her eyes in exasperation tapping her foot, making the porch step creak under pressure.
"Come on!" she pressed, shivering as a gust of wind rushed through the open door.
Jason didn't move. "Uh uh. I'm not moving Skyler cat."
He laughed.
Skyler frowned. "But I want you in here with me." she murmured.
Jason's ears felt hot. What did she just say? He blushed. She wants me with her? He looked at her fondly, getting ready to give in.
"Well I mean it's cold out there and you should be in here warming up-" she corrected herself sloppily.
"Fine," he said as he got to his feet. "I surrender."
Skyler smirked triumphantly.
Just as Jason was about to go in and accept defeat, his mother brushed past him and entered the house first.
Jason and Skyler exchanged a glance. Jason smirked, strutting through the doorway.
"Haha!" he exclaimed. "Who's the lady now?"
Skyler folded her arms. "No fair!" she laughed, shoving him lightly.
Jason smiled as his mom ruffled his brown hair when she passed. He liked it better when Skyler did it though. His head tingled, remembering how his crush had run her fingers through his hair a few minutes ago.
Shaking the feeling away, Jason glanced at the beautiful brunette in front of him.
She just really needs a friend right now. He reminded himself, resisting the urge to hold her hand. This was going to be hard!
His mother cleared her throat. "What do we have here?" she asked her son curiously.
"It's been a while Skyler," her eyes widened with a knowing look at Jason who glared at her. *keep it on the DL* he mouthed. His mother winked. *got it*
She mouthed back. *What is DL?*
Jason sighed. *down low*
His mother looked confused. *what's below?* Jason sighed with exasperation. *nevermind.* his lips formed the silent words dropping the conversation. Before his crush could notice.
Skyler smiled at his mother. "Greetings Mrs. Morganson." she said sweetly. "sorry to barge in-" she began.
"Not at all Skyler, you know you are always welcome here," Jason's mother smiled at the teen girl politely. Then she took another look at the girl's tear stained face and blinked.
"What happened here?"
"Kash Princeton." Jason scowled and prayed for his mother to understand the situation.
The woman's eyes widened. "Oh my. That stuck up jerk you told me about?"
Jason grinned. "That's the one."
she remembers!
Skyler's eyes darkened.
Jason put a comforting hand on her shoulder. For a heartbeat he was nervous that she would reject the gesture but to his relief and surprise, she didn't even roll her eyes. Comfort was just what she needed right now.
Skyler blinked at him, gratitude shining in her brown eyes.
Jason swallowed smiling at her happily.
His mother came over and handed them each mugs of hot chocolate.
"Now Jason, you should have offered our guest a seat!" she scolded gently.
"Right here dear," she gestured to the living room.
Jason crossed the room and sat down. He patted the couch cushion next to him gently.
Skyler's cheeks grew slightly warm. "Are you sure ma'am?" she blinked.
Miss Morganson nodded. "Have fun you two," came the reply as she made her way up the stairs. "But not too much fun!"
Jason groaned and facepalmed inwardly. He gave Skyler an awkward smile.
Mrs. Morganson didn't get the message.
"Holler if you need anything!" She finally climbed the rest of the stairs.
Skyler hesitated and glanced at Jason. He patted the spot 2 feet away from him and smiled welcomingly.
"Come over here Skyler cat. We can just talk for a bit," he offered.
Skyler's expression softened and she seemed to relax a bit.
"Y-ya, okay." she agreed, making her way over to the handsome boy.
Jason felt butterflies flutter in his stomach as he anticipated her sitting with him.
What he didn't expect was that as the conversation lengthened, the distance between them did the opposite little by little.
He blushed, trying to ignore the fact that his leg occasionally brushed against hers. It sent an electric current pulsing through him. And he decided that was his new favorite feeling.
It was getting dark outside. He sighed reluctantly.
"Well, it's getting late-" he began, only to stop when he felt her head fall onto his shoulder.
Heat rushed into his face. "S-Skyler?" he mumbled awkwardly, "What are you-"
A quiet snore answered him and he relaxed, glancing at her fondly.
She's asleep. He realized sympathetically. Her desperate hike must have worn her out.
He shifted his position quietly, wrapping his arms around his childhood friend gently.
He closed his blue eyes, feeling her warmth against him. He was too excited to notice the small breath that escaped the pretty girl's lips when her eyes briefly flickered open. And she was surprised to see him hugging her so tightly. She closed her eyes immediately, hugging him back. She had needed emotional support now more than ever and Jason was giving it to her.
Gratitude overwhelmed her and she fell asleep in his arms.
After a while, her sleep deepened and Jason smiled, face a bit red. He carefully moved her off of him. It was perfectly reasonable to assume that his mother would not be happy to see them sleeping on the same couch!
He smiled, draping a plaid blanket over her sleeping form.
He hesitated for a moment before realizing that she couldn't hear him. No one was watching. No one would know.
He didn't notice the slight flutter of her lashes when he bent down.
He planted a tender kiss on her forehead. "Goodnight," he whispered lovingly.
He tore his gaze away from the beautiful girl, reluctantly making his way up the stairs into his bedroom.
Little did he know that Skyler was now very wide awake, her blushing intensified by the sweet gesture. Jason had awoken something inside her, something she thought she had buried long ago. Emotions.
